i have a 2000 f150 and i got a new cd player and i cant figure out how to take out the stock radio/tape player. it has 2 holes vertically on both sides and im pretty sure thats how to get it out, but i cant figure it out. please help
you have to have the keys that fit in the holes, if you have them stick em in till you here them click in then give out ward pressure and it will slide right out, and just so you know it mine took quite a bit of pressure pulling out ward on the keys to get it to release,
I don't see why not, may not be recommended though.
On my Ranger I removed the actual dash piece itself and undid the clips from the back. No removal tool needed them, just a small flat head screwdriver to pop the springs on the holder.
I think ford uses special keys. I had a pair of panisonic keys and tried to remove my radio out of my 97. I ended up just tearing it up and breaking on one of my keys.
The "keys" are simply U-shaped rods of the right diameter. They push away some retainers on the sides of the factory radio. You can do the same thing with four screwdrivers of the right thickness; either flat-blade or Philips will work. Push them each in about 2" then push slightly outward to release the retainers. One side might go first...if it does, then put something in to hold it out while you get the other side to release. But if one side gets too far out before you release the other side, the second side might not release, so try to move each side a little at a time.
the easiest way is to go to wally world and buy the keys they are $4 and worth the price, a lot eaiser than messing with homemade devices. but if you don't have the $4 i have used allen wrenches to get them out before but the keys are A LOT easier. just push them in, you will feel a little resistance then push a little harder and they will get to a point and stop, then push what ever you are using away from the center of the radio and pull out at the same time. the keys have a slot in them that help you pull the radio out.
I agree that the money isn't a big obstacle...it's just that if you want it out, you probably want it out NOW and not after a run to the store which may or may not have the tool (can you tell what I think of my local supply shops?)...while the correct tool is always the best choice, the screwdrivers (or allen wrenches) have worked just fine for me, and it's one fewer infrequently-used item in my toolbox.
