when coming to a stop from highway speed I get a crack noise coming from right underneath middle of my 99 4x4, also happens when i accelerate hard then let off the gas quickly causing the transmission to shift, and theres the sound,"crack", I have tried coasting to a stop from highway speed, while in neutral, and it seems the sound never happens. Is this a symptom of a bad u -joint?
Not that I have heard, but I have read about one ot two that the bolts had worked loose allowing too much play in it.
Also, I have read about adding grease to the splines where the driveshaft goes into the tranny. They were designed to have a little play in the splines and the grease keeps the noise down.
Could be a U-joint. I had one that went out a couple of months ago and it started out the same way. It would "pop" sometimes when I accelerated or let off the gas. It gradually got worse until I got it fixed.
My 2000 2wd has a high pitched hum coming from the same spot, and I have been told that it is the U-joint. It started after I towed a trailer across country.
Does this sound familiar to anyone, before I go replacing it??
if your not sure it your u joint just crawl underneath your truck and try to turn the drive shaft with your hand if it moves while the truck is in park then yes you have a bad u joint
of the two opinions that have been given so far i would have to say it is probably the tranny mount but if you are getting a crack noise under there just crawl under and look to see if you can tell where something might be hitting somewhere it shouldnt be
