I have a 2000 Ford F350 Crew Cab Long Bed Powerstroke Diesel. I am a part of a truck club in my hometown ... here's the dilema. Two of the guys that also drive 2000 PSD swear that the odometer can be unplugged - I was told that it cannot be due to some electronic stuff. Can anybody settle this? THANKS :-)
You can unplug it if you find the right plug on the tranny. Your cruise control won't work, and the check engine light may come on. But nothing should interfere with drivability.
I don't mean to sound like a party pooper, but I think it is illegal to unplug the odometer on a vehicle registered in the state of Virginia. I know it is illegal to in any way tamper with or attempt to or to roll back the mileage on a vehicles odometer here in VA, and I would imagine the same holds true in most states. If it is not illegal in your state, at the very least it would in my opinion be unethical. How would you like to buy a nice looking five or six year old truck that was only showing a few thousand miles on the odometer, and on the way home throw a rod thru the block????????????? I doubt you would be very happy, if I bought your truck in that situation and it threw a rod, because of high mileage and/or abuse from high mileage I was lied to about, I would be very, very unhappy. If someone did the same to you, I doubt you would jump for joy as you sat awaiting the tow truck.
And what other reason would you have for unplugging it, other than to misrepresent the actual mileage when you sell it? I am curious.
LAST EDITED ON 22-Dec-00 AT 05:29 PM (EST)[p]Maybe I wrote my post wrong or maybe you guys took it wrong. I wasn't saying I have unplugged my odometer nor asking HOW to unplug it - if you re-read the original post you'll see that. I was told that Ford had changed up its odometer to STOP people from doing just what your saying -- Some other guys say that it can be done without any harm to the electronics and such. ALl I wanted was a YES or NO answer that could settle them running their mouths!! I didn't want directions on how to do it - I agree with what all of you have said and was HOPING that I was RIGHT in hearing that Ford had come up with a way to prevent this. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
PS - The truck I had before this one (1997 F250) had 210,000 miles on her when I sold it- The odometer read EVERY mile I ever drove her! Im not one of those people out to screw somebody over! Just a guy with a qusetion!
I did go back and read your original post. Even though you did not ask for instructions or directions as to how it could be done, the original post still sounds to me like you were interested in doing it to your truck. Maybe I just took it the wrong way, and if so, please accept my apolgy, sorry I indicated you may want to do something illegal. It would have been much more clear if you had included in your original post that you did not want to do this, you were just curious.
Sorry for the misunderstanding~When I said "Can anybody settle this?" I meant could anybody give me a yes or no answer - not give me a how to! S O R R Y !!
If you take proper care of your Powerstroke diesel it should still be running strong at 500,000 miles. Why would you need to unplug the odometer? You probably won't live long enough to wear this thing out!
CBR,
Try to see this from our point of view. A person (unless they are stupid ) is not going to come on to a message board asking flat out how to unplug a speedo. They are going to beat around the bush a bit, try to feel out the info. Most of us here have been asked about it so much that it is a sore subject around these parts. After reading these posts I don't see where anyone said anything out of line to you to warrant your sarcastic behavior. The answer to your question is that with most of the newer vehicle people don't even bother unhooking the odometer. There are some folks who buy insturment clusters from junkyars that have lower milage on them Believe it or not the dealer can tell if you had your odometer rolled back. An aquaintance had his done and got nailed for it by the dealer. They voided the rest of his warranty I am sure it can be done. Most of us in here are driving used trucks and don't like the idea of getting stuck wth a truck that has had the odometer tampered with. Nothing against you but I would try and talk my friends out of this. Take it easy.
Please refrain from discussions of odometer fraud on FTE. Its unethical and it rips off the next guy to buy the truck.
