Clutch slipping

I have a 86 BII with v-6.
Today at lunch the clutch pedal became very very stiff and…….then, the worst of situations.
Clutch slippage, …ug….is it the pressure plate…..or?. Could it be anything else that is easy to fix....
I tried to look under then darn thing and could not even see a throw out arm…
Any help

Sorry Tim, I'm not really into Manual trannies so I can't comment on what would make it stiff. You could give the Ranger forum a try since the BII is really the same truck and there's more traffic.

I did not know they were the same, are most BII's automatics.
What year is close to mine in the Ranger world?
This is so out of character for my truck, owned it since new.
Only 90k on it so, I believe it is low mileages.

I doubt the clutch needs bled as the line runs up to the resavor and thus air in the line runs up. I think it is just wishfull thinking that there is a simple fix. Probably time for a clutch.
If you havn't had any thing apart than it should never need bled.
If there was air in the line it would feel spongy, not stiff.

Did you replace the slave cylinder when you replaced the clutch? The reason you can't see a throw-out arm is because the slave cylinder is concentric (mounts around the input shaft rather than using a fork) and inside the bellhousing.
Assuming that the pressure plate and clutch disc are good, I'd be inclined to believe it's a hydraulic problem. Maybe not air in the line, but something else restricting fluid flow, or a bad slave cylinder or master cylinder. "Bleeding" the clutch might not resolve the issue, but it might be diagnostic. Does the fluid come out clean? Does the pedal move more freely with the bleeder valve open? If it were me, I'd probably start by bleeding the clutch (maybe flushing the clutch fluid would be a more appropriate term for what I would do), just because it's cheap and easy.

Well…. Here is an update; it finally stuck the pedal so it could not be depressed at all.
Found someone to pull the tranny...........got in it this morning to try and back it out.
Everything is fine pedal is as free as can be. Hum.......so I drove it to them and they are pulling the tranny.
It has got to be the salve........will keep all informed.
This realy bugs me…to have somethnig happen and then fine.

No wehn they did the clutch last time...........no salve was needed, so they said.
I think the proper thing to do, do the slave when it is apart.

I don't like pulling transmissions. When Doing a clutch job I allways replace all parts no matter what the apearance.
Sorry to hear about your luck. The worst part is labor will be the biggest part of the bill.
I have an 89 Ranger I bought new. It still has the original clutch.
It's got 3.73 gears and I think that helps the life of the clutch a bit. 115,000 miles.

It seems I have one of a "weird" tranny some Oriental name.
Parts like the slave cylinder............... expensive.
Disk and Pressure plate not bad.
Pilot brg normal.

Question

I dont know for sure but I think youe Tranny is a FM 146.Look at the bottom of the tranny if it has a flat stamped steel plat with a dran plug in the middle of it, it is a FM146.That s what most 88-90 BII have in them.I would get a new clutch set about $125.00 and put it in and have the flywheel turned then you know its right. The pilot barring goes in the flywheel on a 2,9 engin{Fords better idea}As far as the hyd unless you ran it dry or broke something it should be fine, check everything for leaks. Haven't heard a lot bad said about the Toyo-Kogyo, haven't heard a lot of good said about it either. I suspect that, like the Mitsubishi transmissions (FM-145 and 146), it's adequate for the job it's been asked to do.
According to the information I have, the TK transmission uses regular old Mercon ATF as a lubricant. I'm not sure who's telling you that fluid isn't available for it anymore, but Mercon is easily obtained just about anywhere.
