The recent MacWorld alluded to some new Alpine HUs that supposedly were going to have some level of integration with the Apple iPod. Anyone know anything about this? I couldn't find any mention of it in Alpine's Spring catalog.
On a related note, I think that the JVC HUs with the 3.5mm front adapter are a thing of the past...I couldn't see any such models on their web site. Pity if it's true...that was a nice match.
Couldn't you use anything with RCA inputs to hook up to your iPod.
I could...in fact, that's what I did in my last vehicle. It's not a bad solution, but it has two problems:
1. with my Alpine HU, I went from the AI-net to RCA (one adapter) to 1/8" (another adapter) to a cable to the iPod. The amount of indirection in this connection creates opportunity for loss and interference, especially given that the signal out of an iPod isn't exactly "hot." I'd like to find something more direct.
2. RCA jacks are at the rear, and I'd rather have a cleaner-looking install.
Afternoon MZ,
I couldn't find too much info on the Alpine website either for this, but they did have an email address you can try out. Can't post here since the forum strips the email addy out.
Ahh...so that's their implementation...using an AI-net box. I had hoped for something more direct...I sure like the 3.5mm jack located on the front of some JVC and Aiwa receivers...hard to top for simplicity.
It depends whether the Excursion HU has an auxiliary input or not. If not, it probably falls into the category of "it can't (practically) be done." If it does have an aux input, it probably uses RCA jacks. You'll need a 3.5mm to RCA adaptor cable of the appropriate gender.
I'm guessing the Excursion HU is the same as mine, which means it doesn't have an aux input. If this is the case, you'll need a new HU.
What all is needed to hook up the iPod to a stock CD/Tape head unit inan excursion?
A cassette tape converter - the ones with the litle wire that will run out and plug into your iPod.
The sound on those converters is surprisingly good.
It'll run you about $16 @ Walmart.
Target has a kit by RCA for $20 that includes the tape adapter and a multi-votage cigarette lighter adapter. You might want to take a look at that one.
My Nomad MP3 player uses 5volts so it's hard to fine a 5v adapter but I found one made by Jensen at Best Buy...of course that was AFTER I bought the cassette adapter and BEFORE I found the package deal at Target.
Ended up spending $36 for them seperately.

Is the quality sound like a cassette or near CD quality?
Is the quality sound like a cassette or near CD quality?
I'd say somewhere in between but probably closer to near-CD.
With the Nomad I can hear a slight hiss but it's probably because of the 128k encoding most of my tracks are recorded at.
Plugging it up to my Sirius satellite radio I can hardly detect a hiss at all.
Now, don't get me wrong - they're ugly with that little wire hanging and I WISH I had an aux input... But the cassette adapters are the next best thing. I think anyone would agree that the sound is much better than you would expect from such a kludge.
Any of the new (04) Alpine "swing face" HUs will control your Ipod through Alpine's control box. It's supposed to be out this summer and will allow Ipod control directly from the deck. I bought the new CDA-9835 in anticipation of this as I use my 40gb Ipod all the time.
