Canister purge solenoid problems

My canister purge solenoid was recently broken into two pieces during some a/c work. Is this a part I really need for fuel economy, or engine performance, or is it mainly emission. The part is over $100, and I'm not sure if I need to replace it.

It could possibly cause some slight fuel mixture problems if it is computer controlled. It will also set a code, but should not hurt driveability I wouldn't think.

Thanks. I think I'll keep checking the auto wreckers around town for the part.

The truck is a 93 Explorer XL with a 4.0 v6. We've decided it is cheaper to keep it and fix it up, rather than buying a new truck. We gave it a 3 inch body lift and some 31's and a cool flame paint job. The motor has been rebuilt, and now all the little things are starting to add up. ie. air conditioning, exhaust, vacuum leaks, you know, the usual.

So any help is appreciated.
