Question Remote Start

Hi guys, looking for some help again. I'm looking to get a remote start for my PSD. I know there are ones made with timmers to allow the glowplugs to warm up. I also know that some of them are able to check to see if the glowplugs are at the correct temp. If they aren't they go through the timmer again.

What I'm wondering is what one seems to work the best? Have you guys any luck with these? Thanks for the help!

Mine was installed by a Ford dealer in NH and is a Ford unit when I bought the truck used. It does all you say and you can exit the truck and leave it running by pressing the start button and take the keys with you leaving the truck unable to move. If you touch the brake pedal it kills the motor. It will run for 15 minutes then it will time out.

Do you by chance remember what kind of price that ran you? Thanks for the reply, my truck is almost done being rebuilt so little stuff like the remote start is now an issue for me.

I put one in my truck. I got if on ebay for $54. I put another one with an alarm in my 73 corvette. They both use the same key fob, so that's convenient.

I really like it. I can start it from inside my work place, and it is warmed up (and A/C going) when I get in.

Thanks. I'll have to look on e-bay and see what I can find. I wouldn't mind having an alarm that is a little better then the factory one since I am doing an upgraded audio system inside.

Any other brand names or product location that you guys can think of is great. I always like to be able to pick from a few different ones.

Thanks again guys,

Derek

Viper, Ungo, Clifford and Automate all come to mind. I got the Automate in mine and saw that is what Ford uses at the dealer yesterday. Mine is set for a 10 second timer, but I believe u can wire it to the wait to start light. 10 seconds is plenty for the glowplugs for me, I checked in the morning when it takes the longest for them to warm up. I'll have to check it in the winter when it comes to make sure it is still enuff time. Mines has the dual way transmitter and the alarm has a bunch of cool features that come in handy with this truck.

Mine is a Crimestopper RS 900 system. It was pretty easy to hook up. I put the remote antenna on the back window of my pickup (inside the nose of my vette since it's fiberglass). It monitors the wait to start light but you can also have it wait a fixed amount of time. It doesn't know the temperature of the glow plugs -- I don't know how that could be done. It will also control the door locks, and I use the auxilliary output to drive a garage door opener. The key fob has four main buttons -- lock, unlock, start, and auxilliary. Then there are two small buttons on the side. One turns on the LED so it can be used as a flashlight. The other allows you to use the same FOB to start a second car. You push the second button and the LED flashes for a few seconds. During that time, any button you press works with the other car. The unit with the alarm just adds the alarm and typical alarm features.

If you press the brake or open the hood, it turns off. It also automatically locks the doors after it starts, or if you leave it on when you take out your key, it will automatically lock the doors when it shuts off (after 12, 24, or 36 minutes I think). There is also a turbo cool down button you can put in if you want. You press it up to five times, and it keeps the engine running 1 minute for each time you pressed the button (up to five minutes).

Hope that helps.

Yellow, thanks for that info, sounds like a pretty nice system. Do you recall what that cost ya? I liked the 2nd car thing. Do you know if the 4th button is able to be programmed in to the remote windows? I'm looking to do a auto window control too (open or close). Just wondering. Thanks again guys for the help!!!

The starter only was $54. I think the alarm/starter combo was $78 or so.

I found out I can't use mine. Don't know about where all you live but in a lot of towns around here is is illegal to let your vehicle run without you being in it. And that includes in your own driveway. I don't like the law but nothing I can do about it. First time the cop just knocked on the door and told us to shut it off and about the law, said to many vehicles being stolen. Tried to explain how it worked and he said it didn't matter the law is the law.

Thanks for all your help guys. Fordborn, I don't know which part of the country your from but i'm sorry to hear about that dumb law. We are allowed to leave them running if we want, but I'm also from Detroit and just about everybody leaves their truck/car running while they aren't in it, or to warm it up. If I were you I'd contact you local gov and ask them about it, or do some internet research to make sure. I've had cops tell me dumber things that weren't true before.

I did some research after your post and gues what I found. Kansas ammended the law. It is illegal to leave your car running unattended unless it is equiped with a remote starter.

Here is what and why.

State law says it is still illegal to leave a running car unattended, unless it is equipped with a remote starter.State Sen. Les Donovan, R-Wichita, chairman of the Transportation Committee and owner of a car dealership pointed out that legislators changed the state law to accommodate a Kansas City car manufacturing plant, which is producing Chevrolets with optional factory-installed remote starters.
