Fuel pump

70 torino 302 rebuilt 3 yrs. ago and has been stored since. Need to replace fuel pump. Not sure cam size. Told performance cam, original owner intended to install 4 barrel. Have recently installed engine w/ holley 4 barrel carb. Appears fuel pump needs to be replaced after setting so long. Discussed w/ parts supplier who did not seem to have an opinion. Not that knowledgeable so thought would check and see if any members had suggestion whether to stick w/ stock fuel pump, which i believe puts out about 40 gph @ 6 psi, or performance fuel pump with a range of 80 to 110 gph. Would like to keep type that mounts to the block. Truck will be used for street driving, may get an occasional urge to punch it.

Any suggestions or input would be appreciated.

thank you,

dave

If you are only going to be doing street driving, then the stock style pump would be fine. But, if it's really hot where you are, you could run a high-output pump, with a bleeder and a return line to prevent vapor lock.

Thank you for info. Thought may look at the middle of the road pump they advertise puts out about 80gmh. Will go thru another parts supplier who should be able to tell me if there is a point where you can have an adverse effect on the fuel system. Reading thru catalog and there is some mention were it indicates should go to less restrictive thermostat if going w/ the high flow pumps.

Thanks again,
dave

I run a stock pump on my 460 with an Edelbrock Performer intake and 750 carb, CompCams 268H cam, lifters, springs and an Edelbrock double roller chain and gears. I also have headers with 2 1/4" duals with Mustang 2 chambered Flowmasters on it.
The stock pump feeds it fine unless I have been towing down the highway for awhile in 90 degree heat and stop and idle for a little bit, when I take off again, it starves for fuel when going into 2nd gear for a couple of seconds, then picks back up.
You should be fine with a stock pump unless you are going to crank the motor to about 7500 rpm (not likely )

Compared to what you have under the hood, the stock fuel pump will do me fine. Thanks for the input. Intend to pick it up tomorrow.
