'87 2.9 runs lean
Camcraft RV cam, stainless valves, ported new Mahle heads, JBA headers.
All new sensors except knock, "rebuilt" computer, new dist and TFI.
Tried to get up into the Sierra for test 4x4 fun, exhaust was too hot-- carpet
got hot from cat. Engine stayed cool due to oversize radiator. The engine
was also very weak, could not maintain 60 mph and had a VW bus pass me!
No pinging or anything slightly dramatic. Spark plugs are WHITE, metal blued.
IF it were carburetted, I'd suspect a bad power valve.......
All tests I have done show normal readings, and it passed smog inspection:
Fuel pressure varies 32-42 psi, leakdown test is 10-15%; runs fairly smooth.
1.1 psi exhaust backpressure
I haven't done the computer codes yet, do the Calif vehicles have a different
hookup from federal vehicles? Last time I tried to read them with the old computer
I just got a steady 12v output. Yes the grounds are all good!
One seemingly odd thing: At idle the ignition timing is 23 BTC, at WOT it is
about 33 BTC. Is this normal?
Would too small of injectors cause this? I bought the set on Ebay! :-(
Thanks! Jeff

Did you check the timing with the SPOUT unplugged? if not, you are reading the timing with the computer already adding advanced. What color injectors are they?
Does it have MASS-AIR? if not, you will probably need a chip to make up for the added air flow due to the cam and opened up heads. The speed density system will not know that the added air flow thru the engine is there and it will not add the extra fuel (widen the injector pulse width).
Today I read the codes, and got a "37" on both tests. I replaced the EGR
transducer sensor (I guess I overlooked that one*...), and now I get the beloved "11"s. Woohoo!
It has a bit more power, but still not what I'd expect......
How many run/off cycles does it take for the computer to be optimal?
The fuel injectors are tan in color. Got them from FiveOMotorsports......
I'll drive up the foothills tomorrow and see how it runs. If it is still lean and
heats up my carpet I'll try the aftermarket chip. Anyone have suggestions for
such a chip?
Thanks again for all your help!
Jeff
*figures I'd overlook the ONE crappy sensor!
