What the Pros use

I was wondering if boxing an entire frame is not so good why do the aftermarket builders do it?

I have my truck down to the frame and I have welded all the original holes up but am now wondering if I should box the entire frame and add a X-member. Some say the truck should flex but others say a stiff foundation is better. I have the scots front end and 4-link. What should I do. I am still very indecided.

Any thoughts?

The original design of the truck; i.e. the twistable frame and the way the body was mounted, was to provide allowences for the roads of that time and for the intended use, that being a truck that was likely to encounter "Off-Road" conditions (Not the same "Off-Road" as todays meaning.).
Also keep in mind that the engine was not somthing that could launch hard trying to pull the wheels off the ground.
My guess that the reason the "Pros" would add full frame boxing are:
1. For big engines with lots of torque
2. To charge more money for their "Build".

Your decision, If you are going to launch hard on a regular basis, box it.

i like the idea of boxing the whole frame for no other reason than if u have a good strong platform to start with current type suspensions will work at there best, and this can't be a bad thing. the first one will test u though for the rails are not as straight as they may appear and u will need to make a form of jig to stop distortion whilst carrying out this work.'
i just pulled a frame appart that looked ok untill it was sand blasted, paint can hide many sins, so if you have allowed a few weeks to do it, double this, then u are closer to the time involved.
it is good fun and a learning experience, and besides u can justify buying some real cool new tools to play with.

Well thanks for the information. I have gotten rid of most of the paint but that has been with a flap disk and elbow grease. My sandblaster is new but has been on the fritz since I started using it on the frame. I plan on putting 400hp in the truck but that wont be for a little while. The truck has been a daily driver for me untill I crashed it but now I want to make sure that it can withstand many more years of driving, with hopefully less accidents. I plan on adding an X-member but I havent heard much about them so I dont know if that would be the wisest idea.
