I had my engine rebuilt about 5 months ago and everytime i slame on the gas to pass someone or just show off theres a smoke trail. Ive got a Edelbrock 650 CFM carb 4 bbl and a 400m. Was wondering if it this smoke had anything to do with bad timing, coil, plugs, or wires?
black smoke would sugest to me GAS, a rich condition, could be weak ignition system, bad or wrong heat range plugs, improperly jetted or malfunctioning carb. hope this helps DW
I'd say better plugs and a better coil would be a cheap and easy place to start. It sounds like you're not getting enough spark at WOT to burn off all the gas that your carb is spraying in. do you notice this every time you open up the secondaries? If so, get a new coil, and if you're running stock plugs/wires, you will probably want to upgrade those as well. Keep in mind that your stock setup was for a 2-bbl carb, so it never needed enough spark to burn 4-bbl worth of gas
heh yeah that should do it... but be sure that you have good 9mm wires to handle all that spark. might as well upgrade to the accel dist. cap and rotor too. IIRC, they're not too expensive and they are built for high spark.
hell, that could be a big part of the problem right there... are you noticing any misfire at WOT? If so, there's your black smoke. anyway, if that is your problem, then the new wires and coil will fix you right up :-)
