Stumbling

I'm sure this question is a repeat, but my search through previous postings didn't address this specifically.

I have a '96 4.0 XLT with 89k miles I just picked up a couple months ago.

I get a stumbling at about 1/2 throttle. It's noticable accelerating up to speed on a freeway and worst when pulling up a hill. It feels like the ignition is cutting in and out; it's very sharp and distinct. If I give it more gas, it goes away. When I get up to speed and let off the throttle, it goes away. I'm guessing from what I read here that my TPS and/or MAS may be to blame, since the stumbling is very much throttle-position and engine-load related.

I will pull the parts and clean tonight, but would appreciate any input.

I'm curious if the O2 sensor or fuel filter would cause any of this. Since it's not a problem across the board, I'm guessing not. But don't let me influence anyone's response.

Thanks.

its the wires for sure. mines done it twice now, i finally zip tied em away from the exhaust minifold. i had #4's sleeve melt a little bit on the manifold and was grounding out. runs great now. its a pain to check the pass side but if you just pull the wires on the distributor inside the car you can find out if thats the cause. by the way, has anyone had a sticky choke? a while back every time i started up it sounded like it wanted to die, but i give a little gas and it went away untill the next few times i started it. i think it has somthing to do with colder weather because it hasnt acted up lately. hope it helps

Supra,

Let me know if you find the solution to cold-start stumbling. Mine is rarely strong enough to stall the engine, but I usally have to give it a little gas to make sure it doens't stall.

Thanks for the input.

yeah, I would check the plug wires. And if you decide to do the plugs while you are at it, DO NOT put bosch double platinums in or it will be missing again in just a few miles.

ive been using bosh for about the past 10k miles so far and its never ran better. id suggest changing the fuel filter (10 min or less install) its under the car on the frame rail about where the front drivers seat is. change spark plugs and wires, distributor cap or a rebuild. that should correct your stumbling. if its a dirty injector, keep putting the cleaners into the tank, just toy around with different brands. or you could try running the engine at medium to high rpms and spray some carb cleaner into the intake manifold to clean it a bit too. hope it works for you. as for the cold start stumble, i have no idea, id guess theres a scientific explanation with the choke being cold but i dont know if ill ever find out. hope it helps

(sorry for the hijack!)

Berry, I just put in the bosch double platinums in, since the regular plugs were out of stock, what is your experience with them - I seem to be running rough since then. I haven't had time to see what is causing it, but maybe it's the plugs?

The bosh plugs will cause problems in the coil pack type ingnitions because the material from the outter electrodes will start transfering to the center electrode on the exhaust stroke spark. Mine lasted maybe 2000 miles before the miss started. I replaced them with real motocrafts and have had no problem since.
I forget which brand makes the plugs for motocraft, but it has been discussed here before. They are less costly than the "ford' parts.

Isn't it true that the problem with the Bosch plugs are limited to the 4.0L with EDIS?

If it only effects the EDIS, I guess my rough-ness is something else on my 3.0L - I knew that was too easy to solve (not that changing the plugs is anything close to easy!!)
