Differential Wire or Line?
I was taking another look at my differential on my 79 Ranchero, and i noticed that there is some wire or line that plugs into the top towards the right. Does anyone know what this is for? I know its not the spedo cable, that plugs into the drivers side of the transmission, so i have no idea what its for.
Thanks!
Danny
I don't know if Ford was using the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) back in '79, or maybe you have a later model axle in it, but if it is a wire, it is likely the VSS, which is a sensor that mounts in the top of the housing and reads electromagnetic pulses from the tone ring attatched to the ring gear, for use with an electronic speedo or ABS brake system in later vehicles. This doesn't sound likely in a '79 car though.
Other possibility, and not a likely one, is that the wire is for an electrically operated selectable differential lock, like an Eaton E-Locker or Detroit Electrac. Again, I doubt this is the case.
