Turn signal question

Was wondering if there is anyone out there is not using a factory steering column?

There is a "multi-function" switch that is part of the column for the proper function of the turn signals.

Has anyone found a way to wire turn signals without this switch?

I see you can buy an aftermarket kit but just wanted to use my own switch and relays if anyone has any suggestions.

I have the turn signals functioning with a 3 position momentary switch using a relay and flash cube, however when I step on the brakes they don't continue to flash, what am I missing?
Thanks, Brent

I'd recommend just using a Signal-Stat 900 turn signal unit. NAPA and JC Whitney carry them. It's easy to put in, and it's well built and worth the money.

The brake lights circuit has to be run through the turn signal switch in order to work correctly. Take a look at this page on my web site for a simplified diagram of how these things work:

Try to run the Flash animation if you can.

You can do it. You can run the Napa switch that will handle the brake circuit, or you can run a trailer convertor box like the one in the picture.

It cost's $11.88 at advance auto.

If you look at the left side of the box, you will see a left turn wire, and right turn wire, a brake light wire, and a tailight wire.

Take the left and right turn wires from the toggle switch you have now, and hook them to the left and right turn wires on the left side of the box.

Take the wire from your brake switch and hook it to the brake wire on the left of the box.

You can disregard the taillamp wire and not hook it up. It's not really needed in your application.

Find the wires going to the rear lamps for brake/turn, and hook them to the brake/turn wires coming out of the right side of the box.

You can still disregard the taillamp wire on the right side of the box.

See how the box takes the three input signals and combines them into two output signals? It worked great on a 53 f100 I had.

Thanks for your input, I really like the option of using my own switch, but I will check out both options.

Thanks a lot for your help

Franklin2 could you give me a little more info on the trailer convertor box the picture doesn't come up to that page and I'm not aware of an Advanced Auto Parts in my area. A brand and model number would be great so I could see if there is a local place that carrys it.

Thanks again

The website is partsamerica.com, but it's advance auto in my area, and I think maybe Kragen? in other areas. The store may be called something else in your area.

Go to partsamerica.com, click on auto accessories, click on trailer/towing, then click on taillight convertors. it's the one for $11.88.

Just wanted to double-check something about using that Litemate convertor box, My truck has a double filament bulb and has 3 wires coming out of the socket 1 ground and the other ones are for the turn signal and stop.

Is this the same way your 53 was?

If you still think it will work I will pick one up tonight.

Thanks

Yes, that was the way my 53 was. Actually when I first got it, someone had added seperate turnsignal lights, since in 53 turnsignals were not standard. I hated the way the extra lights looked, so I used the box to run modern taillights wired like yours where they are combined into one light.
