I'm wanting to paint my '53 in a nostalgic flat black. Can anyone recommend which way to go with this? As in a black paint with flattener, or an epoxy black primer??? I'm going for that flat black look, but not the "bare bones" flat that a straight primer gives. I kind of want that low, low sheen to it. I will probably go with Dupont materials, but PPG is a possibility as well. Any tips is well appreciated

Going for "the" look you are after, will take a little experimenting.
I would suggest using a hardener. That should help lock in the appearance and prevent future fading. The problem with hardener is that it will add shine. Thus the need to experiment.
Find a knowledgable vendor who knows his product. Tell him what you are trying to acheive. Buy some stock black and add measured amounts of flattener. Spray some test panels. Once you get the affect you are after, that is your formula.
I tried base coat/clear coat first. We killed the clear and got a very flat finish, only problem was it took forever to dry and got some finger marks. Next tried black that was killed, this gave a flat black with just a touch of sheen. I like the look, the picutres are hard to judge by. I did this as an interm measure but really like it more each day. Good luck, Aekisu hit it on the head. Try some test panels to see what catches your eye.
