My '86 Ranger is putting out a sweet smell out of the exhaust... thought it might be antifreeze leaking... would that mean a cracked head? I know that
is a problem for the 2.9 V6 (what mine is) Thanks in advance for any help...
Jeremy
Other thoughts: Cracked block (bites tongue), intake manifold or gasket. Have you noticed any white smoke coming from the exhaust? How do your plugs look? Are they wet? How does your oil look? If the oil looks like a chocolate milkshake you have definite problems. Quit driving it immediately!
Post back with your findings.

That sounds like coolant, I would suspect intake manifold leak or cracked head, the cylinder(s) that are burning coolant will have steam cleaned plugs. You can also try a compression test and cooling system pressure test. Cylinder # 1 & 6 are the ones that normally have the cracks.
Yep... lots of smoke... dont have my license yet... so I dont have to worry about driving it. I have a parts truck with the same engine. would it be cheaper to just replace the engine? I dont want to put any more money into it than I absolutely hafta. Thanks Jeremy.
IF the oil is clear of coolant then you could pull the heads from the other engine, have them magnafluxed and put them on your current engine if they test OK.
