why would my oil become thick and gray after an injector change? i changed the oil yesterday, ran the truck 30 min. ran strong, sounded good, no smoke. checked the oil, it was thin and gray. what gives?
I'm not sure if we are talking about a Power Stroke or an IDI diesel. Was the oil this way before you changed the injectors? I am going to assume that it is an IDI engine. It sounds to me like you've got quite a lot of coolant in the oil in which case it is likely the fault of a defective oil cooler. Unless the head gasket failed at a location where the coolant would leak directly to the cylinder head oil return hole, it is not likely there would be enough coolant in the oil to change the overall composition of the oil,in my opinion. Run a pressuer leak-down test on the cooling system to see if you can find the source of the leakage. Are you loosing coolant from the radiator?
I can't think of any reason the changing of the injectors would cause the coolant to leak into the oil (I am assuming you didn't take the intake manifold off). There is no coolant in the intake manifold but the gasket blocks off 4 casting holes on each bank that go to the waterjacket in the heads. Let us know what you fimd.
