how much lift ?

i have a question about how much lift you can run in a 390 with the stock non-adjustable valvetrain? the guy a our local parts store said no more then 480 lift. i personally have ran 530 lift with no problems. he just makes me laugh when all he keeps selling guys with fe's is the performer cam& lifter set !!!!! saying thats all they can run with the stock stuff !!!!!!

The general rule of thumb is that .550" lift is the limit. That is if your stock valve train is in good shape. Some here at FTE have run bigger cams and been successful. Others have broken shafts with smaller cams. So, it really depends on the condition of your stock gear. Your springs also play a big part. If you get appropriate springs, then the spring pressure get higher with the bigger lift cams.

Greg is absolutely correct. I think the edel springs played a big part in my 801 cam breaking 2 shafts. Size of the cam matters just as much as how agressive the lobes are.

I broke one shaft on my previous 390 with new shafts(stock) while running a Cam Dynamics 284 Energizer with .563 lift. I think about .525 is enough without any worries.
The springs are what will determine the pressure on the shafts. I was using the reccommended springs.
