Dana50-TTB

hey guys, i got an '84 f-250 with a d50ttb in the front (i think, how can you tell between that and the d44ttb?)

but i was wondering about the differential and its strength with bigger tires than stock?

-can you manage to lock these front ends up?
and i'm going to be running 33's for a while then some 35's or 36's and wondering if she would hold up to the abuse with the 460 throwing power at it?

thanks,-James

What is the front GAWR as listed on your door sticker?
3750 LB = D44, 4600(IIRC, I'll have to look it up to be sure) = D50
Also, the axle U-joints look like standard driveshaft U-Joints in the D50, D44 U-joints are plain old axle U-joint

I know my d44 TTB says "D44" on the top of the housing...it's probably the same for the D50.

The D50 has D60 hubs/u-joints...and larger than d44's R&P...It'll definitely handle 33s...but 35,36's might break it occasionally...tough to say..but it's decently strong. The only thing I'd put in place of it is a D60.

yeah, a d60 monobeam is what i was thinking of to replace it with later on down the line, as for the tag...

the Front GAWR is 3305LB and the Rear GAWR is 5873LB.

You have the 44HD front axle. Don't go too hard on it, or lock it up, and it'll be ok.
As for the 50 having 60 U-joints, that'd be nice, but, it has it's own oddball joint...

I have a locked D44 TTB w/ 35s...jus take it easy when on the gas and the wheel is turned...you really won't know how strong it is until you break it...if it breaks often enough...replace it w/ a 60

Yup, all depends on the operator, and, with a selectable locker, 35's would be perfectly acceptable. But, turn the wheel with a spool, and things explode...

yeah good point guys, thanks, how much are either air lockers or selectable lockers for the 44ttb? are they any different than a normal diff or harder to install?

and isnt the whole point of Ford using the TTB was to make the trucks a softer ride and also to?

Yes, the TTB was used instead of a solid axle for a better ride. I have the ARB Air locker, which is just like a spool when it's locked. When locked, both wheels must spin at the same speed unless something breaks or the tire spins. If you're on a low traction surface you can turn with the locker on just fine, but on hard dirt or gravel, I shut it off.

My ARB was about 650, and another 200 for the compressor. I also have the Auburn ECTED selectable locker in the rear of my truck too, but that's electric and not air driven.

so, mustangGT221, do you have a ttb up front in your '95 F-150 i'm guessing along with your 6" lift and 35's?

that is just about like the combo i plan on, and you said it does just fine huh?

well, after i take care of my wheel bearings/squeaking problems, i wont feel so bad as to going after those 35's
