Sensor Locations

Ive had an irradic idle problem with my bronco for a couple months now. Its running very rich, and the exhaust smell is 'killing' my friends whenever they drive behind me.

Also, i suspect that my cat may be clogged. What is the procedure for checking its performance. Ive read references to the temperature method, but didnt get any details.

I want to check the usual suspects, TPS, IAC, 02 sensor, fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter. My Chiltons manual is almost worthless because it covers 1966-1986. I have a Fuel Injected 86.

Does anyone know where i can look at a diagram of the 302, or tell me exactly where each part is.

Sorry for asking so much, thanks in advance.

Autozone.com has a part look up feature It gives general clues about where to look. Also have repair manuals on-line that sometimes help.

Running rich: I'd check fuel preasure first. If it's high replace the fuel preasure regulator. Also, if your fuel return line gets pinched or damaged, it can cause preasure to skyrocket.

Also check computer codes. Check spark plugs/tuneup.

Since I'm bored, and in a good mood

Checking cat: no idea.
TPS: on bottom of throttle body
IAC: side of throttle body
O2 sensor: on passenger side exhaust manifold, toward the firewall.
Fuel preasure regulator: on fuel rail, attached to lower intake manifold, near the fire wall. Test port is on same side, towards the front.

Fuel filter: You have two. Both on drivers side. Easy one is just below the firewall on the frame rail, near the high preasure fuel pump (you also have a low preasure pump in the gas tank). The other filter is hidden behind a heat shield next to the transfer case, on the frame rail.

Thanks Cloim,

Where does the fuel return line begin and end?

Thanks

if it is the fuel pressure reg. it very well may have killed your cat from running too rich. i just had the reg. die on my explorer, and it completely clogged the front end of the first cat.
