How many sizes are ther for reciever tubes ? I have seen a small one (inch ? inch and one quarter ? ) and the two inchers it seems like most trucks have, but I read an add for a hitch setup that was supposed to be 2 1/4. Is there sutch a thing, or was it a misprint ? DF, at his Dad's house
The only sizes that I know of are 1", 2", and 2.5". Could be more, but I haven't heard of them. As for receiver classes, they are so screwed up it depends on the manufacturer.
class is supposed to be by weight capacity, the smaller tubes being lesser weight capacity, the larger heavier. 2" is class III and IV, class ! is the flat bar, class II is the small tube-square stock
Class is supposed to be by weight capacity however you will find that there are some class III receivers with a higher capacity than some class IV receivers. That's what I meant when I said it was screwed up. I have also seen both 2" and 2.5" class V receivers.
1.25" 2" and 2.5" are the 3 reciever tube sizes that I know of, with 2" being the most common. Reciever tubes are measured on the inside. The Reese Titan is the only 2.5" store-bought receiver hitch that I know of. www.reeseprod.com
When i bought my sidewinder equiped F250 it had the 2.25 reciever tube welded in the custom bumper. Stopped at the local trailer sales. Told them i needed a hitch for the 2.25 reciever, they could only get that size in a 10000# configuration.
Thanks, guys. It would seem after reading your answers and doing some searching, there are 1 1/4, 2 as the most common, 2 1/4 as an odd-ball heavy duty, and 2 1/2 as a somewhat less odd ( reese titan ) heavy duty options out there. With 2 inch receivers available with up to 10 K towing ability, the 2 incher would seem to be the best choice for 99 % of us. DF, at his Dad's house
