have an 89 f-150, had the 5.0 EFI in it, found a 87 f-150 with the inline 6. decided to put the inline 6 in the 89 cause the 5.0 was bad. everything matched up except the wire harness, changed those around and the brain. the inline 6 ran fine in the old truck, but when i start it now have to keep pressing on the accelerator to keep it running, and sounds like it is sucking alot of air. it mostly just stalls out and runs rough. But if i pull a vaccume hose off the intake will idle high but when i drive it just runs rough and has no power, Checked out another truck all vaccume lines are right, I have the same wiring harness from the 87. changed over all componets from 87 to 89. no change. HELP

well sounds like the idel aire bypass valve is not doing it's job. make sure that is plugged in, and make sure the timing is set right. the only other thing i can think of is, plug wires are mixed around.
Try removing the vacuum line from the map sensor but do not plug it, leave it suck air. Try starting it then. It worked for mine but at the same time it runs so rich it blows black smoke. I'm told to replace the computer. I just haven't been driving it lately and haven't gotten around to replacing the ecm.
Sounds dumb, maybe but check for restriction in the air inlet. I had a customer with a mouse problem in his garage with a similar problem, untill I cleared 15lbs of leaves and dog kibble from his air cleaner.

Went ahead checked the idler looks fine, unplugged the map sensor idled real reved up fine, but when i drove would die. have good fuel pressure, just seems like im sucking to much air, Ran fine before i took it out of the 87 f-150. could it be something in the 89 itself.
Have you checked all the seals around your air box and filter... my EFI 4.9L did that once and I had forgot to screw the cover back down on the filter box, not sure what sensor that messes with there, but sounds like it could be the problem. Have to tried to pull any codes from it to see if there are any problems showing up there? How about the PCV valve?
the only code i was able to pull off was 95 (thermactor air system problem - right passenger side, air flow always upstream. or fuel pump monitor (fpm) signal indicates circuit problem.) have no idea what they mean. getting a little technical for me
