I measured the stroke in my 390 like i have read here to do. a strieght piece of wire, piston at the bottom of the stroke, wire in the spark plug hole. I carefully put the wire in, as streight as i could touched the center of the piston and marked the wire with a sharpie. i put the mark at the bottom of the spark plug threads.
its 5 inches exactly. (on #1) to the top of the threads is 5 1/4 or close to it.
I measured it 3 times, bottom of the threads to the piston surface is 5 inches on the nose.
I read it should be, for a 390, 3 3/4..
I read 5" what did I measure wrong or do I have a different engine?
does the heads make a diff? the chick said they put 428 heads on it.
This time put the engine at TDC and remove spark plugs #1 and #4. Stick it in hole #1 and mark the wire, then put it in hole #4 and mark the wire again. Don't turn the engine over, leave it at TDC.
a dowl rod works better, so does the 1 and 4 plug out and not moving the engine.
it's 3 3/4 every time I try it. the wire I was using last night was reading a bit over 3.5, but the pre marked dowl i dont have to mark, just look in the plug hole and make sure 1 and 4 are measured off the same spot.
