Some 2003-2004 Super Duty F-Series and Excursion vehicles built before 9/29/2003 with a 6.0L engine may exhibit a turbo-induced exhaust moan/drone between 1600-1800 RPM. If you had it, you would know it. I found it driving at 60 mph (I have Torqueshift 5speed auto with 3.73 diff) with the engine turning at about 1750 rpm. With cruise control set at that speed/rpm and start up slight incline so cruise control adds some accelerator there would be a lout low pitched audible vibration, like a moaning. Very noticeable. Ford put out a service broadcast saying they were aware of the problem but no fix was available. The moan/vibration was caused by a resonance brought on by engine firing and turbo rpm About mid January they came out with a fix for the 2WD only and just recently came out with a fix for all.

After 9/29/2003 engine builds were 04s with a different turbo and different pedestal.

And that is the story.

Any update? I have it with mine at 46-48 mph and more like 1400 rpm.

It's gone. It's not just a vibration. It is quite audible. But it is gone now.

I have a New 2004 F250 6.0 Diesel Lariat Crew Cab 4X4 Short bed Automatic with 5300 miles on it. I did notice at approx 1600-1800 rpms @60 mph -65mph a moan or resonance. If i increase the speed or rpms the resonance disappares. I guess I need to visit the Ford Dealer to fix the problem. Question is, should I wait until they have a stronger knowledge of the problem or take it in now for repair?

Note this is from the Ford bulletin:

This would be for 03 engines only. It really sounded as though it was possessed. 04 have different turbo aand bracket. There are still minor vibrations throughout the range of RPM and speed. What you hear may be nature of the beast. Have it checked out.

Well,,

Truck came back thursday for the Pedastal replacement/Pipe alignment.. Another success!! THE BEAST HAS BEEN TAMED!!.. I'm no expert on 6.0 drone/vibration, and mine has been the only one I've driven with the condition, to gauge the 'intensity and range' but this is the result of the repair.. My drone/vib was at 1750RPM and was pretty 'severe' on the ankles, and the drone/moan would be very noticable through all the shifts at exactly that RPM.. This repair has made it VERY 'liveable'.. Is it totally gone.. Kinda hard to say, since all engines have ranges where 'some' noise and vibs are normal.. I barely feel any vibs through the gears, and 'very slight' to NONE at 1750RPM/62 MPH as before, where this truck spends much of it's time in my commute.. The drone sound is 'somewhat' still there though.. Maybe Ford will engineer a Y-pipe to better control the vibs/drone, but till then, this repair has made the truck much more driver freindly, not to mention quieter!!

It truly appears to be a frequency that is the problem, and alignment is working. ..well damping it or moving it to a rage we
do not see. ....oops hear.

One more problem down
congrats

Yeah Tim...

It does have 'some sensations' which is 'understandable' for sure at other RPM's (down low only), can't say I noticed or not before.. But, it may be that I was so focused on the 1700-1750 death range, that these are 'either' new, or, spead out originals from the drone running condition.. The 04's that I've driven still feel a 'might' smoother across the band though.. But, All and All, a much better driving experience!! Worth a shot... If suffering from the Drone....
