Gas Mileage Expectations
To answer your question, the EPA rated the 4.6 and the 3v 5.4 as both 14 city and 18 highway. While the 4.6 will pull your boat you will be very displeased with a 4.6 if you drive a 5.4. I pulled very similar loads and my 97 f150 had the 4.6. Now that I have the 5.4, there is a night and day difference between the two. You will definitely regret getting the 4.6.

There is nothing worse then driving a under powered truck. I had the 97 F150 with the 4.6L. It drove fine empty, loaded it sucked. My 2000 had the 5.4L and it was great. I pulling 5000# loads through Mountains did pretty good. I now have the FX4 5.4L with 3.55 LSD. With 50/50 driving I am getting 14.8-15.7 with 86 octane. Hwy miles at 80 mph I have gotten 17.9 mpg.
IMO you are better off with extra power not being used then getting into a situation where you need the power and dont have it
