Recognizing that somewhere someone has asked this question I reluctantly and with appreciation query:
Looking at purchasing a FX150 Supercab and considering the 4.6L vs. the 5.4L with 3.55:1 gearing. I will be towing a 5000 pound boat and trailer and wonder if anyone has opinions/experience with this configuration on two issues: One, will the 4.6L do the job and second what might I expect from either engine for city/highway mileage in general use (not towing, I know that's going to be ugly!) Thanks,
How often do you tow? My boat weighs between 3000 and 3500lbs which I tow on a weekly basis. I have the 5.4L FX4 with 3.73 gears on order right now. Ford claims 18 hwy when empty and I've talked to a few people who tow with the same setup getting 16 with a similar boat. The 4.6 with 3.55's seems a little small if you're towing a lot (IMO).
Thanks. Probably will end up one to two times/week. Have had boats in the past and when the tow vehicle isn't up to it things can get dicey. Trying to get an idea about having enough to pull her and keep in mind gas mileage. Some might say it shouldn't matter given the boat gets about 2 mpg!
I have a supercrew with the 5.4 and I'm getting about 16 MPG around town and have gotten 19.2 MPG on a trip. I only have 3000 miles so I hope (wish) it will get better once the engine is fully broken in. I don't have a boat (yet) , but I do have a 16 ft. tandem axle trailer I tow regularly. It's the reason I got the 5.4, so I could have a few extra ponys under the hood. I have no problems pulling it and it doesn't hurt my gas mileage.
I have an XLT SCAB, with the 4.6 engine and 3.55 rear end. I have 3500 miles on it. I have averaged 17 around town, and just completed a 900 mile trip through the mountains of PA - I averaged 21.6 mpg on the trip.
I also tow a 4000 lb boat and have no trouble towing it.
I don't want to discourage u in anyway but i only get 16-17 mpg with my STX scab 4x4, no tow package at all. I was getting 15-16 before i bought a tonno bed cover.
I would be happy with 16-17 at this point. I'm not towing/hauling anything at all, 75% hwy miles, STX reg cab. It started out with 13.4 mpg but has improved somewhat at 3100 miles. I'm hoping it will loosen up a bit after I get a few more miles on it.
Do those of you reporting highway fuel economy around 17 mpg drive at the posted speed limit? Here in Michigan where the speed limit is 70 and everyone drives 80, I get 14.2 mpg on my 5.4 S-Cab. On a longer trip through Ohio, where the police are RABID, I managed 14.7 mpg.
Adding a tonneau cover and free-flowing exhaust didn't help at all.
I recently changed from FoMoCo dinosaur oil to Mobil 1 synthetic oil (0W-20 viscosity) to see if that helps.
