Just saw an article on the news last night. Talking about gas grill fires. Apparently the problem is that if grease collects in the grill it can catch fire and cause a large flairup. The flaming grease then drips down onto the tank and starts burning there. After the rubber hose burns through the propane is free to add to the fire. In some cases the tank can explode.
First of all the article had reinactments so I think most of what I saw was extreme (remember the staged chevy gas tank fires?). BUT there is some truth to this.
Some safety tips I can think of are:
1. Never leave your grill unattended.
2. Keep the grill clean. This includes the grease trap and grease in the bottom of the grill around the burners. When I clean my grill I usually just wire brush the top where the food cooks and call it clean.
3. The article suggested using an extension hose to move the gas tank away from the grill allowing you to shut the gas off if a grease fire gets out of hand.
When they were done with the reinactment half the cast aluminum grill was melted away. Cooool!
That's exactly why I do not have a gas grill. If I wanted my meat to taste like gas, I would use the oven in the house. A wood pit is the only way to go. My pit is tilted enough to keep the grease away from the firebox and the grease drips into a mason jar screwed to the bottom of the pit.
Most gas grills have a provision for a can to hang under the belly to catch those drippings as well. However, most folks forget to install it or maintain the bottom to allow for drainage.
Sheesh you must go thru propane like it's going out of style.
I burn mine off after every meal but it only takes about 5 minutes. Another benefit from this is bugs are not attracted to it 'cause there's nothing there except ash.

My grill is small, and for whatever reason uses very little jucie, it is 5.95 to fill a bottle here.
Have no idea if that is a good price, a friend does it for me.
(Now I know why your wrote that.....meant to write 10)
Another thing to remember is to move the BBQ away from the house. That includes not using it under an eve or patio cover (funny how some people like that soot on their house).
Once there was this guy who was doing some grilling and in the process the tank blew up and sent him rocketing into space just as a plane was flying overhead.
After getting to about a 1000 ft he sees a skydiver without the chute open.'
