I've got a 92 4x4 f250 king cab, long bed diesel. I bought the truck about a month ago. The guy I bought the truck from works with me and he says that he was getting between 18-19 mpg. He checked it constantly. I've checked it twice since I've bought it and I'm only getting 13mpg. What is everybody else getting and where should I start looking first. Thanks
Mines's a bit older (5-speed '88), but I get 13 for average driving and 16 to 18 if I run on the highway for the entire tank. Averaging 18-19 is pretty optimistic.
You could get 18 if you drove like you were 90.
Take off from stops very slowly, shift early, drive 45 MPH. Also living in flat country would be a plus as well as living in the country versus the city.
I live in a city, drive 75, and live in the WV mountains. I also haul and tow big loads. I am getting 11.5 average MPG.
My 7.3L turbo diesel is getting 1 to 13 MPG commuting, about half city half highway driving. 176K miles on it. I haven't done anything to it yet (just got it) but will be tweaking things and checking for wear and such. I was hoping for maybe 15mpg, but will see if a little work and fiddling can help that. I put four new commercial tires on it too, that shoulk help a very small bit.
I'll join in...
In town driving around 13.something. On the freeway 17.2 mpg on a 400 mile round trip. 64-67 mph.
Our numbers here are way better then a gasser.. My 460 never saw 12mpg..
That's almost a 50% increase in mpg for me. This certainly pays for my oil & air filter changes. Empty the 460 was sure fast though..
With fuel prices this high, the diesel rocks...
But I have a 460. I was getting 15 mpg on the hi way with a rv cam and all else stock.
I rebuilt it after throwing a rod, and get 11 to 13. I was looking here to see if the pre 94 diesels did that much better but it doesn't look like it. I am still fine tuning mine and hope to get a little better
If you look on the 460 gasser disscusion group you will find several 460's getting close to 15mpg
You don't have to be sorry...?
I think that's great about your 460 mpg's..
In general 460 3/4 t trucks get between 9-12mpg on the freeway empty here.
Out here in the PNW we go from sea level up to mountain pass levels 1800-5K ft within 60 miles. So another words it sounds like if 460's can get 15 where you live, maybe I can get... ? Who knows.
Anytime anyone post's about mpg's remember we all drive in different enviroments, so don't get too excited about it.
My '91 7.3 was getting 19 m/g which is 16 m/g US before I rebuilt the torque converter & tranny. NOW I get 23 m/g which is 19 m/g US. This is the BEST case.... NO load and all hyway driving. When I check the milage going bact & forth to work (10 miles hyway) it dropps off 3 m/g!
