I'm in the process of building a 390 for my '70 1/2 ton 2-wheel drive shortbed pickup. What would be a good cam? It will be a daily driver back and forth to school as well as a stoplight racer. So far it's been bored .30 over, 9.5:1 flat top pistons, lots of head work, 390 gt intake, edelbrock 600 or 750, and headers. I will also be building a c-6 to go behind it. Should i put an aftermarket stall converter in it? How big? It also has 4.10's.
I'm building a 390 for the same purpose - daily school driver and a stop light/weekend racer. My truck is significantly heavier and running a slightly lower compression, 9.2:1, but I think you would benefit from the same cam that I am going to run. Based on what everyone here told me, and my machinist, I am running the Crane 343941. I had intended on running the 801, but my guy found the 941 for pretty cheap.
Ratsmoker should be able to tell you about the 801 - he has a pretty hot 390 that seems to have a very manageable idle with the 801.
Anyway, I would certainly consider the 941 and 801 for your application. If all goes well, I can give you first hand experience with the 941 in about a week. : )
