has anyone tried those mini kits they sell at home depot? i was thinking of getting one, as its only 50 bucks. i want a lightweight torch i can take to the junkie for those "stubborn" parts hehe...
Propane works well for cutting, and like said in other posts is a lot cheaper than acet. It does not seem to generate enough heat to weld with, so I switch over to acetylene.
i mean those little mini ones. i know the one you mean. the one im talking about is one of those little plumber ones. its a really small thing, says it cuts and everything. welds brazing soldering. maybee i'll get one and try it out.
those small OXY-MAPP ones? I was going to get one, but I google'd and find that most people say that is won't cut anything without spending a lot of $$ on oxy tanks. And it doesn't heat that great.
I picked up one of the $50 oxy-mapp rigs at a yard sale. It doesn't get hot enough to braze well and the oxy bottles ($10) only last about 10 minutes. They say it will braze, but all I could make it do was clump the seam. I like the flow look myself.

how did it cut? i allready have an oxy acc torch. but i wanted to know how this one cuts?
It didn't come with the cutting torch, just a single tip. If it's the cheap torch rig that screws on the small MAPP gas bottles, it's up to you, but I wouldn't waste my money. If you're talking about the small oxy-ace rigs that come mounted in the red or green plastic molded cases, we have those at work and they work great for cutting.
I've been wanting a gas rig here at home, (at work we have everything from the small oxy-ace plastic molded case to the big wheel around.) I've been pricing things out. The small ones cost about $270 to $450 and I can't tell much of a difference other than buying it at Lowes or a welding supplier. The small ones are nice, because they are portable, but they don't hold much gas. The smaller the tank, the more it costs to fill. I'm thinking of buying the torch/tips/regulator kit from HF for $100 and then buying the mid sized tanks from a welding supplier for $80 a piece. That's going to be the most bang for my buck at under $300. I'll make my own cart. Just have to be careful about fitting sizes.

the only way you can get it to cut is by getting it hot, and then turning off the mapp gas tank to blow straight oxygen on it... like you would on a regular torch except you dont have the lever
I run the SMALLEST tip, because I kike the accuracy, and don't want to remove much material from my cut, as I fit parts together for welding. I learned this from pipefitters. I have no trouble cutting through 1/2" or more, but nice, precise, clean cuts. For just scrap cutting, sure, use a big tip, fast and easy. I ended up buying a new torch set to be able to have a propane tip that fit, as my old one I couldn't find a tip for. I spent just shy of $100 for my new torch, and I love it. I run my pressures at 40# for oxygen, and 15# propane. You can safely run propane at this pressure, as it is not volatile like acetylene is.
