The old style cheap ones that have an end that is about a half inch in diameter, and heavy duty ones that are much wider.
The smaller ones are breakable, and have only four vents in the shroud or tip.
They have flow problems when the torch is turned at different angles causing the flame to change and sometimes snuff itself
The better ones always seem to burn at a constant rate even if up-ended and because they have six vents they burn hotter.
The point of the flame is still tightly focused.
I just brought home one of the better ones and it has impressed the heck out of me so far. It was twice as expensive, but for what it does it is worth every dime of it...
I reccomend the HD torch head to anyone who is looking for one, and even to those who already have one of the small ones because I can see this one easily being capable of doing things a little torch can not do.
I found mine at Auto Zone, but I don't know if they can be found just anywhere. I have never seen one like it at Walmart. Harbor Freight might have them.
I suppose this is something else I need to post a picture of...
I have been doing plumbing for years with those standard propane torches. I bought one of those MAPP kind recently and love it! It has a little red trigger and I push that and VOILA! a nice red-hot (well..blue) flame , that really has speeded up sweating copper together.
I keep it handy for lighting cigarettes also..best darn lighter I ever owned.
I have one that has a tank clip on it to hang the tank off your belt then has about a 6 foot hose leading to the head. I love it it's both mapp or propane, just got done doing a boilier system for a 60 x 120 shop with seperate 3 zone pump and alot of copper work and it was great not having that tank in the way.
I've got one of those self-igniting Benz-O-Matics. Works great with either propane or MAPP gas...and thanks to my brother I have what probably amounts to a 5-10 year supply of MAPP gas. I always knew he was good for something!!
