i have a 02 x with a power stroke.
has any one installed the 2nd alternator. if so how did you wire it?
i can't find any help at the dealers. what a surprise.
The best way to install dual alternators is to use the factory wiring harness. However, the harness and alternator will run over $1200 from the dealer and good luck finding one in a bone yard. Wiring diagrams are available in service manuals, also expensive, but get close to your Ford dealer and ask for a copy of the page you need. If you need more amps, a less expensive way would be to install a higher output single alternator. Good luck in the duel, hope you win, but personally I'd use a 92F Beretta, not an alternator. (sorry, I can't spl either)

picked up the second alt. and the new longer belt at advanced auto for 250.00. the bracket and idler pully was ordered from ford 140.00, can't find any part # for the harness. i think i will do a 1 wire hook up with a amp guage on it. the reason for the second unit is between the sound sys, the new headlights and a electric air compressor for a 5 chime artic train horn. there is a large current draw.
there's a company that sells high output alts on e-bay and they also sell the brackets for the second alt as well they called it a limo mount. As far as draw my system alone draws 400 amps that doesn't cover the lights or video system I used two yellow tops for the sound system and two red tops for the truck. The batterys fit side by side in the battery trays real nice.
installed it this week end, looks great. i tapped in to the current wiring harness for the excite wire. as soon as i get some pics i will post them of it and the train horn set up.
Have you checked out www.highoutputalternator.com? They carry high output alternators for lighting, steroe, and other high demand applications. They should be able to set you up with an alternator that will work for you without the dual alternator problems

Try talking to a Ford Commercial Truck Dealer / Outfitter not the guy who sells the King Ranch trucks. They are experts in after market accessories for F-Series trucks. As you may know a dual alternator set up, especially on a PSD, is very common so they can't tell you there is nothing they can do.
If you're still getting the run around try searching the internet for after market vehicle modifiers like the companies that make ambulance bodies. All ambulance vehicles today must be built on a diesel chassis and there are some ambulance designs that use a F350/550 PSD chassis. They always get the dual alternator option.

sound like you need to add a couple of gel-cell batteries(so you can mout them on their side under the truck in a battery box) to this dual alt set up. if you wire all your acces. off the second set of batteries and put in an isolation contactor from your main batteries, you will have no worry of draining your main batteries while sitting and listening to tunes. your sound system only puts a draw of abouta third to half the fused rating of your amps.
I don't want to be the wet blanket, but this sounds entirely different than the ford 2nd alternator. The systems on that page seem to be constructed such that the second alternator powers a second (semi-)isolated electrical system. I don't think this would work like the ford system even if you tried to tie it to the primary electrical system.
In the Ford system, the second alternator is under the control of the PCM. It does things like only turn on the 2nd alternator once the glow plugs shut off. I suspect there's a reason for this. You also have to tie the voltage regulators together properly or all hell's going to break loose --- unless you're thinking of the limo solution --- having two separate electrical systems.
I have my eye on a replacement alternator --- which should be quite a bit cheaper than the solutions offered there... although this one's likely more pricey:
