1 Wire Alternator....

I have a 77 Bronco and I am wanting to use a 1 wire alternator. As of now I have a standard alternator with the external regulator that came stock on the truck. The external regulator is connected to the harness and there are also several wires coming off the alternator going to the harness. If I use a 1 wire alternator, do I disconnect the external regulator and the wires on the stock alternator and only hook up the possitive on the 1 wire?...and if so what do I do about the harness that the original regulator and alternator are were plugged into? Any thoughts and or opinions would be appreciated...thanks

The best way would be to run a wire directly from the alternator to the starter solenoid + feed, and hooking up the large gauge black/ yellow wire to the alternator as well. This will give a good, clean path to charge the battery directly without bypassing the stock ammeter. You might want to put a large amperage fuse or fusible link in between to protect the wiring in case of a failure.

As for the reg harness. The black/ red and the orange wires go directly from the alternator to the regulator, so they can be removed from the loom. The yellow wire at the reg, goes to the + side of the starter solenoid, so it can also be cut out and removed. This leaves the green/ red wire that goes into the main underhood loom. I would cut it back as close as possible and tape it into the main loom.

yep, the black/yellow wire and the large wire from the one wire alternator to the battery side of the solenoid is all you need to do, just unplug the external regulator and let it hang, hate to cut stuff and want it back at a later date for whatever reason...

Thanks for the help, that's exactly what I needed to do, shortened the wires going from the cab to the starter solenoid, eliminated the wires got to the external regulator except the horn wire. Runs like a champ! Thanks fellas!
