I have a 2000 Expedition and the rear wiper does not work. I have checked the fuse and thats ok. The problem comes and goes, it has done this 3 or 4 times in the past year. And at this present time it is not working, it's been this way for the past 2 months. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I've heard that the rear wiper motors in our Expeditions are prone to failure. The good news is that a new motor isn't that expensive. I'm hoping to keep the one in my own '00 going though...
My 01 Expy was replaced twice under warranty. my 98 Explorer once and my 96 Explorer once also, I would say that Ford has bad wiper motors. I hope my 04 EB doesn't have the same issues.
I've had the same problem from time to time. I have found that if I turn on the wiper and slam the back door or glass, sometimes just wiggle the handle, it will start to work again.
The rear wiper works on an interlock system so that it does not activate if the door or window is open. My guess is that sometimes the latches are sticking and keeping the circuit open. This goes along the same lines as the dome light staying on when all the doors are shut.
You may want to shoot a little WD-40 into the latches.
My Expedition has the same problem. Sometimes would work, sometimes wouldn't. It hasn't worked for about 6 months now. Tonight I decided to fix it so I opened everything up back there. It must be a bad motor. I can hear it clicking when it's supposed to be moving but alas - no movement.
I've been unsuccesfully trying to find a replacement motor on the web.
The motor says:
VALCO 4/3-00399 055.8
4BE
5490 17 62
Anways, got on this site to try and find a solution and ran across this thread.
Guess it's off to Ford buy this part.
Mine quits working every once in a while. I push up on the wiper with the switch on and it takes off. I figure sooner or later I'll have to replace the motor.
A lot of the repeat failures occured due to improper installation. In fact many of the originals were improperly installed on the assembly line and that initiated the problem. Then techs stuck on a new one and didnt follow the included instructions, and sure enough repeat failure. This failure can result from improper replacement of the wiper arm as well. I guess Ive been lucky. My 00 still has the original and never a problem.
I had the same problem on my 2000. I was at the dealer one time, and mentioned it. He said it's a known problem (but I don't remember if there was a recall on it). He said Explorers also had the problem. What he told me was it has something to do with the contacts in the motor. Sometimes they don't make good contact. What he told me to try was when they didn't work to try to "bump" the wiper arm up and it should star working.....and if I continued to have problems, bring it in and they will replace them. I was still under warranty at the time, so I can't say for sure if there was a recall or if that would just be covered under warranty?? I had a friend that took his in and had it replaced. I don't think it was too costly. Too bad I didn't know he was taking his in for the same issue. He told me AFTER he had his fixed. Good Luck!
Mine quits working when, guess, it rains... It works fine with the washer, but quits in a heavy rain... And sometimes my front wipers go on when I lower the drivers window... Where's the Twilight Zone music when I need it????
