Alright guys im in serious need of help. My expedition is getting crap gas mileage and its driving me nuts. My girlfriend drives the truck the most and the best average she can get is 13.9 no matter what it wont go higher and she has the lightest foot in the world she never gets on it. now to my serious problem i have an 16x8 enclosed trailer that i haul my quad in and its killing me the expy is getting a ****ty 5-7 miles per gallon i need to know what i can do to make this a little better ? anyone got any input? stuff i should try and what not? im afraid if it doesnt get any better im going to be selling my expedition and i dont want to do that i love the truck but i cant afford a 62 dollar fuel bill when it needs filled up hell if i keep that up i wont have any money to race all input is needed and appreciated.
Sounds to me like a tune up is in order. Plugs, air filter, pcv valve to start with. Maybe a new fuel filter and O2 sensors as well. If you have the tools and the patience, you'll save about $200 in labor on the plug change. I'm sure that others will have additional suggestions.

Just bought an '01 with the 5.4 for the wife. It is only 2WD and we get about 13.5 around town and a straight up 17 on the hwy. Much better than my '02 F250 V10 4X4 getting 10 in town and 13 Hwy. Anything this big and 4x4 is going to get low MPG. It hurts to pay for the gas but for the safety and the size I feel like it is worth it in the long run!
ok but the 13.9 is not what bothers its the 5-7 pulling the trailer is that normal?? i mean HOly hell i think that is terrible and im debating an excursion diesel???
SPINKS310R just outta curiousity u got a 250R big bore?? very nice choice hit me up and ill throw u out some pics of my 2003 arens/laegers 265R
My aunt must have a Special Expy. She gets 16.2 around town and upwards of 18.5 on Interstate. How is this poss, she get about 500 miles to an adv. tank.
I spent 423 dollars last month on fuel. If you want to play, you've got to pay. I don't mean to be unsensitive but a full size SUV and that trailer gets you what you got.

im not asking for anyone to feel sorry for me i was just wondering if there was anything i could do about it ? actually i dont even car much for the truck thats why my GF drives it and i just use it to haul the trailer shortly after i bought it i wanted to part ways and get an excursion now that gas is up so high and i bought that trailer its looking more like the way to go. i know all about paying to play thats why my quad cost 22k to build and my car cost 11k to build and so forth money is really not of concern im just tired of having to pull over every 250 or so miles for fuel
I just made a road trip with the following results.....
Saint George UT to Victorville CA. A/C on, K&N filter with Flowmaster
15.1 MPG
city driving prior to trip gets me 11.1 MPG
In Victorville, changed the K&N filter back to a normal Fram paper filter
3 days of city driving in Victorville, and hwy driving to Vegas.....
12.5 MPG combined
checked hwy mileage from Vegas back to Saint George
17.1 MPG with A/C off.
I only wish I knew if the A/C really uses that much fuel to run or if the filter change made the diffrence. It did seem like I got back my low end torque with the paper filter. I now will be checking my city mileage now that I am back home and see what I get.
I pull a 3000lb boat and trailer. I got 12.5 mpg and was surprised. I just got my '04 Expy and this was the first time pulling the boat. My 97 Expy only got 9 - 10 mpg when pulling the boat. City I am getting 14-14.5 and Hwy 17-18 with the '04.
You either didn't state or I didn't see what year yours is but the '03 and '04 are recommending a "thinner" weight oil to improve gas mileage. So, with all other suggestions, you may want to consider this option as well.
Bump up the tire pressure and slow it down below 65 and that should get a tick more, other then that a diesel is the only thing that tows that will yield good fuel mileage.
I'm Gettin 10 mpg for my v-10 superduty(8inch lift and 38inch tires)....Some things that helped was putting on the K&N Fipk kit, EASING OFF THE GAS PEDAL, synthetic oil and throwing it in nuetral on the down hills....Higher tire pressure, thinner tires (to reduce rolling resistance), street tires (not all terrain) should help. 4wheel parts had a good article on MPG in their magazine that came out this month
