I pull a 20' enclosed trailer with a 3200lb car in it. Get 4-7MPG. That's about what you're going to get with that setup. My 16' flat bed gets upwards of 10MPG. Enclosed sucks the gas baby!
10mpg when pulling a 7,000 lb. boat with a 2003 2WD. I don't think 5-7 is normal. I do think it is all of the above ideas added together that will get you a couple more mpg.
To "joed 6": happy to see your numbers are consistent with mine for the 4.6L engine. Some responses had me doubting my ability to correctly use a hand-held calculator. As I said in a previous thread: the key to fuel mileage is engine displacement, road speed and load. 5.6L + 70-80 mph + trailer = terrible mileage. "hkiefus" said it best in this thread: with an SUV, you're gonna get what you got. Our options are simple: continue to fill 'em with $2.xx/gal gas or park 'em.
John,
With working at the place you do. How do you afford that ..lol just kidding man I am getting ready to change plugs, get an K&N and O2 sensors for Susie's Ex.. want to help...
to xxx609, good to hear someone else is the same range as we are. should also mention the expy has 121k on it, uses no oil at all, but,,,, my wife takes excellent care of it, oil change every 3k, the smallest noise, down the the Ford Dealer, they do all the work, great service and excellent prices from what I have seen on this board.
I pull 2 04 SC 4tecs back and forth to Tennessee from Ohio. Trailer total weight is about 2500 lbs. Avg MPG is 12.2 roud trip. Of course, that is running 70-80 mph as much as possible. In town daily I avg 12 mpg. mine is an '03 Expy 4x4 FX4, so I guess that is not so bad.
here is the results after this weekend! i raced 2 races this weekend(finished second in both). ok here is what happens i got 226 miles to an entire full tank i think this is ridiculous. the trailer(according to the manufacturer wieghs in at 3226lbs i cant pull hills over 55MPH either its like i got no power and terrible fuel mileage
I posted earlier in this thread and I wanted to add (to the people who don't believe), that while pulling the enclosed trailer it's like attaching a brick wall to your truck. With that said I do run 75MPH when possible. Hills, however I have to put it to the floor to maintain 60-65 up the hills. Just wanted to clarify my poor mileage.
Have a 2003 4X2 Xlt 5.4L 3.73 axle. Get 15mpg in town, get 17 to 18mpg on road. Tow a 5500 travel trailer and get 10 to 11mpg on road. Not to bad for a 5440 lb SUV.
Secret to gas milage keep it a 60mph and slower if possible and whatever you do don't jackrabbit it from the stop signs. Haven't done anything to engine at all. Didn't need a 4X4 drive already had a F250SD 4X4 that gets 7 to 8mpg pulling a 10,000 trailer. Anybody looking for a deal on a 2001 V10 and 31ft Montana.
Cheers.
Frankk
We recently traveled from Columbia SC to Ft Lauderdale and here is our results, going, we left at midnight so with the ac off all the way and really trucking (615 miles in 8 hours with 2 bathroom stops) we got 21.7 mpg highway, returning, left at 10 am so ac was on all the way and mpg dropped to 17.3. AC does chew up the gas big time either that or because we were going uphill all the way home
We also tow a 3000 lb boat and with the ac on during the tow to and from the lake we will never try to check mpg as we can watch the gas gauge move almost as fast as we are , can't wait until our trip to Nashville with the boat to see how we do, will post this one in july after returning from BNA.
1998 Burgundy Expy 5.4
125000 miles
Motorcraft spark plugs, fram paper air filter, stock exhaust, penzoil 5w-30, motorcraft oil filter and pcv valve
I thought is was just me. My Dad left me a 1998 4x4 with 27,000 original miles on it when he passed away a few months ago. It was a real revelation to get only 10 mpg around town and maybe 13-14 on the highway. This is a 4.6L V8. I talked to a Ford shop and they thought that was the correct mileage. I then put in a Tornado fuel saver and a K&N filter. Gas mileage around town is now about 12 and getting 17 on the highway. I still think it sucks because I also have a 1999 GMC Suburban with a 5.7L V8 which consistently gets 18MPG even pulling a 5x8 UHAUL enclosed with an 800 lb load. Average highway speed was 75. I recently put 10/40W Amsoil synthetic in it, but its too early to get a good reading yet.
Hi AL,
First I am sorry to hear about your dad passing, it is very hard, mine passed 3 yrs ago and I still remember him like it was yesterday.
A 1998 with low miles is almost as bad as one with high miles, do yourself a favor and ditch the Amsoil(I will keep my opinion of it to me) and switch back to pennzoil 5w-30(not10w-30) replace your spark plugs with motorcraft only and only from a ford dealer, install a quality air filter fuel filter and pcv valve, also very important change the fuel filter, I bet it is contaminated and partly clogged.
I am sure you will see a remarkable improvement.
I am curious about your Amsoil comment, as I have been using this oil for the past few years in two Mercedes (gas and diesel), a suburban, an Nissan Pathfinder and an Isuzu chassis cab rated at 14,500lb. Prior to switching to Amsoil, I used Shell Rotella which worked well, but I was looking for synthetic mileage. All of the vehicles mentioned are running with improved performance and gas mileage, so I would like to know what experience has taught you about these oils.
I did notice some improvement in the Expedition with the addition of the K&N air filter and the Tornado fuel saver. I am in the process of replacing the fuel filter, but am waiting to get some additional information on the correct tool to use (another thread here). I would think that the stock spark plugs should go a bit more than 27,000 between replacements so I'm not sure what replacing them at this point would do. What would be different about the Motorcraft plugs from a Ford dealer and those from an auto parts store? Aren't they built from the same specs?
I am a A & P Jet aircraft mechanic and synthetics are best used in jet engines traveling at high altitudes, also have worked on cars since the mid 70s and have had many engines damaged by different oils, I ran accross an old timer that convinced me to try Pennzoil and I have stuck with it for over 20 years without regret.
Believe it or not the spark plugs are made side by side at the same plant but they are not the same, ask one of the moderaters on this site if they can lead you to the thread that talks about this.
