The Van is a 94 4.0 XLT With O.D. 2WD and Rear air. Problems started when the Van was run out of Gas. I replaced the Fuel filter and it runs better now. The check Engine light is still on, I reset by pulling battery connection and it is still showing check engine. I had it scaned at Auto Zone and it said "No Codes" I was wondering if it was hooked up right. He hooked to the Port under the hood and then I plug into the cigarette lighter, he had me turn the ignition on, "to run position", but not to start the van. Is this correct or should the engine be running?
Do Yourself A Favor, And Take It To A Real Mechanic. Those Clowns At Autozone Have No Clue As To What They Are Doing. Btw, By Using A Jumper Wire, And A Test Light, You Can Check The Codes Yourself. Get A Haynes Manual To See How To Set It Up. You Use The Testlight In Place Of The Voltmeter That The Manual Tells You To Use. Also, Don't Right-away Assume That The Problem Is What The Code Is Telling You, It Could Be Nothing More Than A Loose/broken Wire, Or A Bad Vacuum Line. Always, And I Mean Always Go For The Simplest Things First. I've Had Too Many Co-workers, And So-called "shadetree" Mechanics Replace The Most Expensive Things First, And Then Can't Figure Out Why They Still Have A Problem, Then I Come Along, And Repair/replace A Wire/vacuum Hose, And The Problem Is Gone. I Love Seeing The Stupid Looks On Their Faces. Good Luck In Finding The Problem, And Remember, Simple Things First.
theres a port on the drivers side (under hood) and like someone said, you can do both tests, running and not running. you probably have some kid of bad sensor. but definatly take it to a real shop. if its check engine you should be doing a running test. ive used scan tool before, not too complecated, even for the morons at autozone. hope it helps
Took the Van back to get it tested, and wouldn't you know the check engine light wasn't on. It finally ended up at our service station and they found a bad Mass Airflow Sensor, and replaced the same. Engine was cutting off and back on on the highway, and felt like it was going to kick the tranny out of the van.
I had the same problem and the 1st MAF meter was bad from autozone. I when to the junk yard and got one from a Explorer and its ok now. Also I would check the ignition wire good that was my real problem.
