Here we go again. I have read a thousand simptoms, and a thousand recommenation to fixing the hum/vibration that the Ford Truck seems to have. I have a 1997 F-250 Powerstroke automatic trans E40D with a triple disc torque converter. The thing is stock height, nothing modified per say. It has a Banks PowerPac System. Any way I have this bazaar humming/vibration at certain speeds and certain RPMs.
It begins at about 30-40 MPH (fourth gear only) when the engine is at 1500-1800 RPM. If you let off of the gas (1000 RPM), or power past it (2000 RPM), it goes away. It will stay gone until it shifts into overdrive and you are doing 60-65 MPH. It goes away again after 68 MPH or so (Same RPM ranges). I have balanced the driveline and replaced all u-joints and carrier bearing $308. No change at all. The transmission has only about 8000 miles, and the engine has 70,000. Wierd, but I think that the problem has been experienced out there somewhere.
The steering wheel does not vibrate. This humming/vibration is in your feet. and the butt. It sounds almost like a harmonic hum when the engine RPM, Tires, and Drivetrain componants all reach a certain frequency.
It may be a harmonic vibration. Try to get it at the speed where it does it and then go to a different gear. If it goes away it may be harmonic. If it only does it in one gear it may be a gear going bad. ????
I am thinking live with it. It would be no big deal if it didn't do it right at 65. If you tow a load, it seems to go away as well. It does go away when the gears shift somewhat. I took the drive belt off and it seems to still be there. It is almost impossible to duplicate with the truck on jack stands. Someone out there must have some ideas.
Fortunately mine doesn't do it at driving speeds, only on acceleration. It is much more pronounced when I'm pulling my travel trialer (30' tag-a-long). Almost sounds like the engine or exhaust is touching the frame somewhere but I can't find any problem with that...
I thought the same thing about the exhaust. Good call. It is a sound just like that. Unfortunalty, no touching that I can duplicate on the Jack Stands... bummer for me. If we can figure this out we will be heros. I am a Master Tech with 17 years experience, and am having a tough time. Worked mostly on foriegn, not Ford.
I was a mechanic in the rmy (63h20) and have been jack legging all my life. I guess I have reached a point where if I don't think it is serious I don't lose any sleep over it like I used to...

as a mechanic i have seen many fords including my own 95 psd that had vibration similair to yours but on trans with many more miles. to fix the problem we put atf+3 in it along with a filter and flush. this takes care of the vibration becuase of the fiction modifier in the atf. this fluid is not the recommended for fords but if your tranny is on its way out your not out anything.
the problem with your situation is that you said your tranny only has 8000 miles on it. i would take it back to whoever put your tranny in.
You sound pretty sure it is the tranny. I have some suspicions, but it should be more consistant through all of the gears. It seems with load, or out of the RPM/speed range it changes drastically

this not always true. i have had major vibration in a ford van and it would bot vibrate until about 55 to 65 only on acceleration and as soon as you let off it would go away. get back on it might vibrate may not. it was the torque converter so we did a filter and put the atf+3 vibration gone. we have done this with many fords with shutter in the trans and many are still going strong with no shutter.
Definatly worth a try. I just bought the truck, so even thought the transmission has a 100,000 mile warranty, in the fine print is says "original purchaser only" nice huh? I will try the additive. In the foreign car market a torque converter shutter is more harsh than what my truck is doing, but I will try it for sure. It would be nice to have a clutch flow chart to see what clutches are engaged at the time.
