I am wondering what I can do to make my apartment a little more bearable. The complex recently changed windows out on us so I have to re-invent my A/C mounts. I also switched to a larger apartment (getting married in July), so I don't know if the air conditioners will do a good job cooling this new place. I think I can get my bedroom air conditioner in, but I am wondering what I can do to the rest of this place to help keep it cooler and drier?
The problem I have is that the place I am in is like an oven with a lot of humidity. I was thinking of trying a new approach. Perhaps getting a de-humidifier in combination with the two air conditioners that I have in this two bedroom apartment. Right now I am suffering with just 2 fans until I can find time to get to the local hardware store to re-invent my A/C mounts.
What do people do that don't have central air or good A/C units to keep a place cool?
I saw these things on TV that are like icepacks, that you put in front of the fan and it makes the air that the fan blows cold... it seems like a good idea in theory
Ceiling fans, dehumidifier, as you said. If you have plush furniture.....you can try a sheet for a covering. I have found that the slightest bit of fluff on a couch or recliner can make it seem even hotter, air flow maybe, beats me.
You could just leave the fridge door open.....that would cool it, and dehumidify.......that'll impress your fiance.
Buy a good fan.
I have a fan that has a built in thermostat. Got it for 25 bucks at walmart
Can set it at several different settings. Dual blade and it'll fly
Keeps my room cool.
Make sure you change the filters on your A/c Frequently as that helps cool it also
De-humidifer would also help.
A fan in the window, pointing out will help circulate air out of the house if you dont have the A/C on.
Turn as many lights off as posible. Any light source puts off heat, not a lot but it does help
If you can get a cross breeze through your apartment it will help but you'll need two windows on opposite ends of the apartment. I do this with mine b/c I'm cheap and my complex has the oldest wall units I've ever seen.
I sleep in a hammock all summer... its a lot cheaper than running 2 ac units...we have big one mounted in the corner of the bedroom, over the bed, comfortable even with 2 people in it...
You need to size your A/C properly (central or window-shaker). Contrary to what some people may think, overcapacity is not better. Oversizing the unit will result in a room that is at the desired temperature but has higher than desired humidity due to the unit not running long enough; we all know the feeling of being in a damp environment. Dehumidifiers should not be needed in the living space of a home with correctly sized A/C; save them for damp basements where A/C is not used. If you're using window shakers, get a fan or two to keep the air moving.
Wife and I own a townhouse and the living room and bedroom is on the west side of the house. In late July and August, we have so many fans running that when you walk in, you come to a 3 inch hover! We also use a portable swamp cooler. They really help, but you do need to have some cool air from outside drawn through it even if adding ice. Now, air conditioning... that would be pure Heaven.
