Brake drum lathe question

I have a Van Norman model 333. The spindle reduces down at one end to 1" where a brake drum is clamped. The other end had a large nut. I removed this and it was a shaft that extends to the other end with threads on the end.

I am thinking that the shaft would snug up the 1" end in a taper but I can not tap it out. Any help would be appreciated. The 1" portion is larger where it goes inside the spindle.

Mike could the small end of the shaft is threaded in with left hand thread, and the bolt from the other end is the lock bolt?

Are you sure it is not a 303? Do a search, Google had a lot of places to check for info, I also tried Van Norman Equipment Co, (bought by Kwik-way in 2001) I have done this in the past looking for owners and parts manuals and have had real good results. Good Luck, George The reason I say 303 is that there didn't seem to be any model 333.

It is a model 333. I saw another one for sale on the web. I am pretty sure the 1" portion is solid metal where it becomes larger. I thought about it being threaded but I can't see why they would do that. Another guy said to unscrew the shaft just a couple of turns and then hit it with a hammer. I don't want to risk damaging the threads.
