Fe446

I have been getting info together to build a 410 motor, but have just read a post by GTEX about a 446 motor, this sounds more appealling than the 410, I know I need a 428 crank and different pistons, but what else do I need to make this happen, I lost a finger in a work accident the other night and about all I can do at this time is plan this project out. thanks in advance for ya'lls help.

Sorry to hear about the finger.
4.08" bore and a 4.25" stroke. This will get you 445cid
Custom pistons will be needed..

My FE446 is actually 4.125" stroke SCAT aftermarket crank in a .020" over 428 block. So, 4.125" stroke and 4.15" bore.

I think he has a 390 block. I was trying to get him close with what he has. Those 428 blocks are hard to find and expensive.

Shrike,

The 360 and 390 have teh same block/bore at 4.05". You can probably go up t0 .060" over, but should only go as far as needed to rebuild. That's typically .020 or .030" over bore to clean up the cylinders.

Then, depending on your budget, you can pick your stroke. A 390 crank is 3.78" stroke, a 428 crank is 3.98" stroke, and there are aftermarket cranks for 4.125" and 4.25' stroke like Randy mentioned.

You can make probably make a 360 that will run with that Cheby, depending on what he's got. A well built 390 would be a challenge for most any 350 in a truck.

Like Greg said a 360 and a 390 share the same block and bore size. the only difference is the stroke. A 390 crank (3.78) is easy to come by., 428 cranks (3.98) are more expensive but still affordable. A 428 crank in a 0.030 over 360 block will get you 416cid. A aftermarket crank at 4.125 stroke will get you 432cid. And as memtioned above a 4.25" crank will get you 445cid.
The cost of the big cid engines get up there with custom pistons and the 4.125 and 4.25 cranks get up around 700 to 1000 dollars.
Hope this helps.

Don't forget the $500+ for a set of BBC rods if you go with the aftermarket stroker cranks.

what about pistons? do you have an after market source? I take it that the 360 or 390 pistons won't work.

If you use the 428 (3.98" stroke) you can get pistons for a Mercury 410cid engine. Because that is what you would be building. For the bigger cranks call around. J.E and Wiseco as well as Keith Black and many others can make any thing you want.
