I swapped out a 5spd for an AOD trans. and i'm
having trouble with the tranny.
It will Not shift into OD.
I dont really want to swap out the wiring harness if possible.
If there is any other way i'd like to try it first.
What did the trans you are using now come out of? What year? The A4dl auto used in these things underwent some changes over the years. I have an '89, the overdrive function is controlled by a solenoid, and there is an electrical connector on the driver's side, towards the front about halfway up that supplies power to the solenoid. If you don't have that hooked up, you won't get into OD. And if your truck originally had the 5-speed, then you don't even have that wire in your harness. Looks like you need to do some wireing, no matter what. And you might even need to swap computers, as I believe the shift points are controoled by the computer. Does your truck have a VSS on the rear axle? I believe that's related. I've been reading a lot of posts on these things lately, as mine won't shift into OD either. It acts like it's still in third, except that when you let off of the gas it freewheels like an old Saab. I'm told the OD band is probably shot, so I'm going the other way and swapping in a 5-speed. Just picked up 2 donor trucks yesterday. They have a good transmission forum here, why don't you check out some posts there on trans. swaps, or ask your question there, maybe someone more knowledgable than I can help you. Maybe there is some kind of shortcut to solving your problem that I'm unaware of. Sorry I couldn't be more help. -TD
I've learned a few things since I made that last post. Forget what I said about the VSS on the rear axle, that's a separate VSS for the Anti-lock brakes, if so equipped. But you do need a VSS on the speedo cable, it also won't go into O/D if that's not on there and hooked up. The '84 that I just picked up has a VSS on the speedo cable that is for the Cruise Control. Napa says it's the same part number as the VSS in my '89, which is for the O/D. I'm afraid that you're looking at swapping in that wiring, no matter what. Since the vehicles are only 1 year apart, it shouldn't be a big hassle. You may want to get a Chilton's manual and study the wiring diagrams. My main concern was that you had gotten a trans that was too new, the ones from the mid to late '90's are totally computer controlled. -TD
so, tiger what you're saying is that there is no way possible to do it like
the CH**y guys do when putting a 700-r4 in a non-cpu truck???
Darnit, i was hoping to make it easy
I don't pay a lot of attention to those brand "C" vehicles, but I think the 700R4 has been around for a long time and is probably self-contained in it's shifting functions, at least in the earlier models. I know I've read something about it, but I didn't pay any attention. I don't think it's really going to be too much of a hassle for you, maybe there's even a retrofit wiring harness available, but wouldn't even know where to begin to look. Earlier I suggested that you post your question in the transmission forum, but at this point I've given up on those guys, they don't seem to want to answer my questions over there, so I'm sticking to this forum. I'm just going to use that forum to search for info without actually posting. Maybe you could go there and do a search, or search the whole site for A4ld swaps. Hope this helps...TD
