Replacement engine for 67 f100 - ideas ?
The original engine is a 360 and it has a bad knock in the lower engine but still runs (not going to keep testing it).
I'm an old time ford truck guy (had a 51 F1 and have a 56 f100), but I'm not familiar with the 360 whatsoever and I'm looking for advice from those that have made the journey.
"In general", is a 360 worth rebuilding or should I put the same amount of money in a 390, 428, etc.. ?
Meaning... are they good engines and were they well designed ?
Do they hold up as well as the others that Ford made ?
My current plans are to just rebuild it (Crank, bearings, etc..) but if they are not considered to be good engines, I may be better off builing a 390 or 429 Boss

Ideas / Suggestions ?
Thanks
Mike
I've always wanted to transplant a Lightning engine into an old pickup just to be the first to do it. Thats just me.I'd go with the 390 option. Although a 429 Boss would be a smokin engine
I don't think the engine is a 360 if it is the original engine. It would be a 352 if it is the original. That may or may not affect your descision to rebuild it as a 390. I've heard people say that the mileage is about the same between the 352-360-390, so they generally go for the additonal torque of a 390. The guys in the FE Forum are a vast wealth of knowlegde on this subject. You may want to toss a line out there.
second yes the 360 is worth rebuilding if it is the original motor it has 37 years on it if that isnt durable what is? and also a 360 and a 390 are practically identical engines the only difference is the crank and rods, which can be bought from several parts stores.
if you are looking to really up the horses and have some fun with the engine edelbrock makes a nice set of alluminum heads for this motor, and a couple nice intakes as well, if you have one on your 360 it will fit perfectly on a 390 same block heads and so on.
also there are a few modifacations you should do to the block while you have the engine out, and if you are going to upgrade the heads also consider upgrading the rockers, there are complete shaft mount assemblies avbailable for this motor.
just some thoughts hope this helps
Get the 390 crank and rods, a good place to get 'em is DSC, or your local junkyard. I'd try the junkyard first to save some money.
Get some aftermarket pistons, TRW makes some great forged pistons, but others are cheaper. Get some with a 1.776" compression height so you end up with a decent compression ratio.
Port the stock heads that are on it, get a good cam like the Crane 343941, get a 4-barrel intake like the Performer RPM, throw a Holley 600cfm carb on it, and you're golden.
Edit: You could also make a 410 by using the 390 rods, and a 428 crank. I think that'd be the way to go if you can afford the 428 crank. Get some 1.680" compression height pistons for it.
Sorry guys...the whole idea of getting my boat out tomorrow has got me thinking Mercruiser and Bow Tie....

If you just want reliable transportation, rebuild the 360 and keep it stock.
It you want something warmer, do a 390 and keep it close to stock.
Warmer yet? Try a 390 with PITA hot cam, knuckle-burning headers, and the works.
Still not hot enough? Get a 460.
