Recently put pipes on my truck. It had dual mufflers, but only tips at the end. Was told they had to come out the side or rear. Did that today.
Tried to emission test it,
test#1 Loaded Hc's 00123 Loaded Co's 4.93
Idle Hc 00127 Idle Co 1.88
test #2 after adjusting timing
Loaded Hc's 142 (350 stand) pass Idle Hc 129 (350 standard) passed
Co Loaded 5.07 (3.00 stand) fail Idle Co .88 (4.00 stand) pass
So, if it's not passing under a load, how would you adjust everything? This is so frusterating. It passed california Test Only station with tips only for exhaust in october. And now, it's not passing with pipes. I understand adding more exhaust piping changes things.
Here is what I did. I don't know if this will help you.
Super Unleaded, New Spark Plugs and I leaned up the carb almost all the way. I passed emissions, pulled out and adjusted the carb back in the parking lot.
Well, my baby is officially Arizonian. It just passed tuesday. Yup, we took it in monday. Was between emissions, the mechanic, and 3 part stores. Took us from 9am to 2pm before I gave up for the day.
What it needed was tuning, and a stupid piece of elbow off the air cleaner. Funny, it always passed in Ca.
They're pretty picky here. They fail me every year for one thing or another. Never for my readings though. Last year I failed because I had a vapor hose that came with a different size on each end because I used a tee to connect 2 diff size hoses and capped off the unused one. (they wanted a "factory hose)
If you guys have problems getting thru, let me know, I have a smartscope with 4-gas.
im thinking about moving to kingman soon .i have a 86 f250 with a 300/6/points/old style 1bbl carb/no cat/no emmissions at all.this truck runs good but i dont want to spend 3000.00 to make it pass.i also have a 71 f250 would i better off if i fixed the 71 or do i have to have emmissions on it too.i thought about putting the 300/6 in the 71 so i dont have to have so much emmission stuff.
need lots of help
thank you

ps.the 300/6 has a old oil bath air cleaner converted to a dry type.i cant find a factory air cleaner for the 1bbl carb .the 300/6 is a 78
im thinking of moving to kingman .does kingman have emmessions testing .if they do what equipment is needed .i have a 71 f250 .the 71 f250 is going to get a 78 300/6.i cant find a factory air cleaner.the 300/6 has a carb and points .ihave a oil bath air cleaner that i modified to a dry type.will it pass the visual.
thank you

well maybe it will finish going threw. it is in the california senate currently, and has yet to become a hard law. at anytime they can pull it and currently it looks that way. arnold isn't giving the lefters what they want, so they are going to throw a bunch of bs laws out here real soon. Watch, you'll see. lived there for 8 years (2 of which i was in the Gulf on active duty), everytime a good law would come up, they would throw it out. the must have known my party stance. i live in Yavapai county, no emission testing here, and doesn't look to be real soon. i am thinking of opening a PO box here, and letting anyone who wants to have their "mail" sent here, can. not saying you should do it, since it is illeagel to operate a vehicle in maricopa county for more that 48 days a year, if it is not registered there. but will rent you part of my box for mailing whatever you want. rent? a six pack of beer a year..
hey husky hauler .
thanks for the info .what county is kingman in .will be moving to kingman in january.whats your brand of beer.when i get to kingman i will contact you ,
thanks

well your not in pheonix or metro tuscon, so you wont need to worry about emission testing. Mohave county, which by the way in native american 'means dumb white man bought this property", does not require emission testing. anyone else in those metro area feel free to contact me if things get "too bad"..
I just got my 78' with a .060 over 460 to pass. I have a medium Crane cam in it ... had to run the truck three times. First one was rich, failed HCs. Second was was too lean failed NOx, third was in ebtween and failed both!
Finally I took it to a friend-recommended shop in Tucson where the mechanic messed with the idle mixtures on the primaries as we watched the computers. I though the cam was causing the problem but based on his experience he said it was just the mixture on the carb.
Well, it passed now and I'm all set. It seems to be running strong enough that I'll leave the idle mixture where it is set. Its definately leaner than it was before.
I was told that HCs are higher in engines that aren't yet broke in and with time it will get to where it runs cleaner. I have about 400 miles on the engine right now.
Something interesting I never considered was that having the idle set higher introduces more air and reduces HCs. I don't have a tach but would guess I went thru emissions idling at about 900 RPMs in neutral. I have since backed it down to about 650 or so.
Do any of you know how the winter fuel would affect ability to pass etc? Was just something I was thinking of.
well with the introduction of alchol it will lean the mixture out. in turn raise the NOx, but it can be adjusted out with timing and mixture control. we use to do it in california. we would get a gallon of rubbing alchohol mix it with 9 gallons gas, and you would see a 440 mopar with a 292 .509 cam PASS the idle mixture test. yes a new motor will almost always fail an emission test. look at a label on the radiator cowl or valve cover on a late 70's car or truck. you will always see a higher rpm and mixture setting. as the motor "loosens up" both will drop. less resistance in the motor will allow for a cleaner burning and hotter combustion chamber. never try to have a truck with less than 1500 miles smogged. it will always fail. most referees will give you a 90 day pass to permit you to opperate the vihicle until the milage has increased enough to pass. i did ref work in Cali and never had a problem issuing a permit to allow you to go to the DMV to aqquire a 90 day temp operating permit..
I don't know where that came from but, 96 and newer need the scan. 01 and newer don't even need the test. Only testing for vehicles more than 4 years old.
