Hey guys, I have a 92 150 SC that has 302/auto in it. The tranny is gone in it, but my buddy has a 92 250 standard cab w/351/auto that he just wrecked. The tranny is good in it. Will those tranny's swap. Ive dealt w/the older FSB but not the newer ones. Is my only difference going to be bellhousings? Thanks for any input!
The bell housings should be the same but the computer... that may be another story. If the transmission codes on the door jamb label are both "E" than no problem but the usual transmission for the 302 in 1992 was the AOD which was code "U" I believe. Some 302's with the towing package and 4WD's had E4OD's so you never know. The 351W on an F250 usually came with either a C6 (code "G") or the E4OD (code "E"). You could swap the whole engine/computer/transmission from the F250 though.
So the tranny's wouldnt work then if they were different? Wow I never realized they got that specialized. Also on the door jamb label will it say transmission and have an E by it or is it in a code? Would the computer and harnass from the 351 swap to the 302? Im at school now, so I gotta rely on my dad to get the number for me. Not like my 78 I can have a motor and tranny swapped out in a few hrs. LOL Ill go look tomorrow!

Well, that's what I've heard. I've never actually tried it but someone else posted in the Superduty/Heavyduty forum that the computers were different or had a different program for various transmissions. It makes sense because a C6 is a three speed, the E4OD is a 4 speed with an overdrive cancel button whereas the AOD you probably have now is a 4 speed without the overdrive cancel button. The code will be under "TR" at the bottom right hand corner of the vehicle compliance label on the driver's side door jamb. If both your truck and his have the same "E" E4OD, then it'll be an easy swap. I'm not sure if the trasnmission has a separate control module but I don't think so. I think the PCM has everything on it for both engine managment and transmission management. The only transmission right now that someone actually posted some facts on that has a separate controller is the new 5-speed Auto TorqueShift. I don't think the PCM off the 351W will work well with the 302. They have different fuel trim programs for sure.
Hey, I just thought of something. Does your truck have an overdrive cancel button and an amber light that says "OFF" at the end of your shifter? If so, you have an E4OD. If your dash says P-R-N-OD-D-1 then you have an AOD. The E4OD will be P-R-N-OD-2-1.
On edit, I found this on a transmission web site:
"The E4OD's torque converter and transmission are controlled by the same computer that runs the engine. Unless you have a Ford EEC-IV engine, the E4OD can't be swapped in. Can be reprogrammed with proper chip kits."
You do have An EEC-IV computer in a 1992 but you would have to have a Ford dealer re-flash it to use the E4OD rather than the AOD. You would have to get all the wiring and shifter from the steering column of the F250 so you can have the overdrive cancel button and light. Also the little dash insert that has the correct shifter pattern which is different from the AOD. I'm not sure if both the AOD and the E4OD have the same length, I'm still looking for that but if they are drasticcaly different, you'll need a shorter driveshaft too.
Here's some infor on transmission lengths I found. the "face to mount length" is the distance between the transmission cross member mounting bolts and the bell housing to engine mounting bolts:
AOD total length: 30 3/4"
AOD face to mount length: 22 3/8"
E4OD total length: 38"
E4OD face to mount length: 29 3/4"
C6 total length: 33 1/2"
C6 Face to mount length: 22 3/8"
Wow thanks alot thats alot of info there. I'm going to check out his 250 tomorrow to see what all I'll want off of it body wise and I'll check the tranny code. I called my dad up tonight and told him to head out to our barn and check on the 150, still havent heard from him yet. When I get all the info straight I'll post back on here and see what we have then. Thanks!!!!
Ok, I just got back from lookin at my buddies 250. The drivers side door was smashed in, no possibility of opening it up to see the code. But the shifter has the Overdrive ON/OFF button like my 150 does. Does this mean they will work?
Oh, you wouldn't get 8 MPG! More like 16 or 17 on the highway and about 13 to 14 in town. (My father's 1987 F250HD with the 351W and 5-speed ZF S542 gets that easy.)
The 460's get about that, the 351W's are much better. Not as good as my 330, but almost. Like you said, oh well, at least you got a tranny out of the deal.
You might get better mileage with the 351 if you can keep your foot out of it. It wont have to work as hard at pushing around a large truck as the little 302. If you can manage to get the whole drivetrain and computer you should go for it.
