Okay, I need help and fast. My transmission is really acting up. It seems like it can't decide to change gears. Ill get going and I can feel it jerking and it bothers me. I think somehow my gears may be stripped or something. Is there any way I could check to see if something is wrong without paying 60 bucks for a pro to do it for me? Its getting progressively worse day after day and I feel that its going to die soon, and I dont want that to happen. Please help me out on this
How many miles on your truck? Have you had the fluid changed as required by the maintiance plan? Sounds like it something more serious than old fluid but you never know.
It just rolled over 115k miles yesterday. I got the truck about 3 months ago, and I havent changed the ATF, so I dont know the last time it was changed. The last owner seemed like an honest guy who knew how to keep his truck in shape, so I wouldnt doubt that he changed the fluid at 100k. But as far as seeing if something is wrong without taking it somewhere, does anybody have any suggestions? Say I drained the ATF, would I find little metal shrapnal and spurrs coming out with the fluid if in fact my gears are being stripped?
check the color of the oil on the dipstick. look closely and see if there's a brown tint or smell of it and see if you can tell a burnt type smell. if so, better have a wallet with a fair amount of $$$. any metal shrapnel should get caught in the filter. if you take it to one of those places that does the re-circulating type oil change, the machine will show the pressure, which indicates condition of filter which indicates metal?? shavings or whatever in it. if pressure is very low, (they will tell you) then you got trouble. anything stopping up the filter had to come from somewhere!!! one last resort , you might try resetting the PCM but i doubt you'd be that lucky. shifting is controlled by the computer based on input from sensors etc. hope to be of some help...paul
