The only 351M/400 cylinder heads listed in Tom Monroe's book are D5AE-AA, AND D5AZ for 75-80 and D1AE-A, AND D3AE-G2B FOR 71-74. They are all 78.4cc heads.
My 400 heads are also D5AE-A2A. when I bought the engine, I was told it was a 351CM out of a 77 Torino, but once I got it apart, found all the number macthed 400 part numbers, including the crank, which still had markings from the last rebuild ( 5000 miles before supposedly) that said it was a 351M. But casting numbers don't lie.
So, are the D5AE-A2A heads different than D5AE-AA? Inquiring minds want to know.
I found out the cause, apparently the valve spring cracked ( exhaust valve cyl #7) the valve did not return and got slapped by the piston. the valve broke and the broken pieces scored the cyl wall.
There is a guy in AZ (D&L Machine?)who said he can build a 351C with a moderate Cam and .030 over for $2500 I sent him an e-mail asking if he can put a stroker crank in it.
If you are in New Jersey you don't want to ship your motor to Arizona for a rebuild. Nor do you want to pay shipping for a motor from Arizona. I think that for $2500.00 you can get your motor rebuilt locally.
I think that Lunati is in NJ, if you can't find a shop near you, try Lunati. They do cams and cranks, they might do a whole motor. They can give you a stroker crank.
I don't think that $2500.00 is cheap.
Some rebuilders just grab reconditioned(?) parts from a bin and put together a motor. The crank may be ground undersize, so it can be reused. If I had a motor that needed rebuilding, I would have that motor rebuilt, so I know that all my original parts were reused, except what need to be replaced. The parts that needed to be replaced would be replaced with NEW parts.
Chances are the parts in your motor are in better condition, than those that a rebuilder may use.
