Spark Plug change

Has anyone used the denso plugs in their 5.4? I just bought my expedition a couple of weeks ago and have thought I might go ahead and do a tuneup. My ford dealer strongly discouraged using anything but motorcraft plugs, but I know from experience that dealer parts are not always the best. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Are you talking about the iridiums?

jas used he NGK iridiums and likes them. Additionally, I've read many accounts where the guys swear by the iridiums. If I were going to use anything but stock Motorcrafts, this is what I'd use. But ask yourself, what's wrong with a proven 80K-100K mile Motorcraft plug?

I have the iridiums and would swear by them. But as Buzzard suggests, why spen $96 on plugs when you don't specifically need to? Even in my case they may not be required.

I know you wanted input about 5.4 owners, but I thought you might like to know that I put in the Denso Iridiums last week in my 4.6 and they're great. Around $100 at Autozone. Aceeleration has improved, noticeable power gain, and it runs a lot smoother. Good stuff...

I put NGK Iridiums in my Expy 5.4 and my SD V10. I got them for $6/each at O'Reillys. Quite a price break over the Densos apparantly. I have been very happy with them, the ones in the V10 have about 25K miles on them with no problems at all.

Let me repeat why I don't like the Motorcrafts - the black plug is a liability down in a hole where water can collect and cause the plug to rust. If it gets bad enough, the plug will break in two when you go to take them out. This happened to me on my Mom's Maxima and I have only used nickel or zinc plated plugs in those applications ever since. Now, Motorcraft does make a nickel-plated plug in the Double Platinum, but I have heard sometimes the little platinum button on the ground electrode can dislodge and cause internal damage. Whether this is true or not I don't know but they were not but about a buck or two cheaper than the NGKs so I figured why take a chance.
