Rear Hatch 89 BII

I have an 89 Eddie B Bronco II and the rear hatch seems to be fiberglass. Is this the way they came? Seems like bad design with spare tire and all. Thanks.

Yep its fiberglass ,it was used to cut back on the weight.The best way to fix any cracks that are going to happen,is fiberglass over the cracks then make you a meteal plate to go betweem the tire holder-latch and door.Thats the best way I can tell ya how to patch{fix}it.
