Hey I just got my new victor intake to top off my 557 stroker. I was going with the 68 429 thunderjet heads. My ? is it says to gasket match the head to the cj intake gasket. So I set the gasket on the head and scribed a line around the opening and it looks like way to much to take off. Anyone ever do this? It looks like I would have to take off a good 3/8" off the top side of the port. I called edelbrock and they said this is what had to be done. They said to do the heads but not the intake. The ports on the intake are close to the size of the 68 head just in a diffrent location. should I just go with a set of cj heads? Maybe a aftermarked? I already have the vales, springs, retainers, everything to do the 68 heads.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd go with the newer SVO CJ heads or with a set of SVO Sportsman or Pro Stock style of head. A reworked set of factory cast-irons will never flow enough to feed 557 c.i. above 5500-6000 RPM.
When I was racing my 514 c.i. Ranchero I picked up over 120 HP just by changing out a set of cast-iron SCJ heads for a set of M-6049-A429/460 heads with a single-plane intake and 1050 Dominator carb.
